Hughenden Manor, West Wycombe & Hellfire – Country Hike
Hughenden Manor, West Wycombe & Hellfire – Country Hike
Walk length 10miles/16km. Circular. A scenic walk exploring the countryside close to Hughenden Manor and West Wycombe with a combination of woods and fields. Hughenden Manor was the home of the famous Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli from 1848 until his death in 1881. He entertained Queen Victoria here in 1877. The house is now owned by the National Trust. The historic village of West Wycombe is largely owned by the National Trust and features many interesting buildings built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Mausoleum and Golden Ball above West Wycombe village are impressive local landmarks, visually dominating the village and can be seen for miles. The old village of West Wycombe and Wycombe Hill supports around 8 ghosts wandering the graveyards, caves and pubs! West Wycombe hill has been used for a quarry for centuries for roads and houses in the area and the quarrying was extended in the middle of the 18th century to help employ local workers after serious crop failures by Sir Francis Dashwood for his notorious Hellfire Club that may have involved Satanic or Pagan rituals but also a lot of partying! Lunch & Finish Please bring a snacks and water for the walk. The walk should finish about 4pm and include a pack lunch stop and optional pub at the end, however the time may be earlier than this depending on the weather and pace. We will go for optional drinks at the end of the walk at High Wycombe, the pub is very close to the station. Meeting The walks starts outside High Wycombe Rail station at 10.45am after the train from London arrives. We will have a snack lunch stop at West Wycombe village before the return leg to High Wycombe. Walk Cost: £7 cash on the day organizer fee. For paypal it is '[colin45@hotmail.co.uk'](http://colin45@hotmail.co.uk'/) Please send as friends and family to avoid charges. For bank transfer message organizer. Train: £27.40 return to High Wycombe from London Marylebone but should be about £19 with a group save or network railcard. Train from London: The 9.53am train from London Marylebone gets to High Wycombe for 10.45am. If coming from London I suggest meeting close to the WHSmiths from 9.30am to give you time to get tickets as you may have to queue (see picture below). Discounts available with network railcard or a groupsave. The organizer will not be getting the train, but will meet you at High Wycombe. Car: Car parking at High Wycombe is charged but free off street parking is available 10mins walk away (Rectory Avenue or adjacent roads, please check for restrictions before parking). Please make a note of the organizers number Colin 07709305681 Walking Safety Walking is a great way to keep fit and generally very safe; however it does contain an element of risk. E is for Emergency Exits: The Fight for Independence @ Imperial War Museum
Join us at **Emergency Exits: The Fight for Independence in Malaya, Kenya and Cyprus at the Imperial War Museum, London.** ***(Fancy the museum, but not this exhibition? Feel free to sign up and just visit the museum sections you want to see.)*** *Emergency Exits* focuses on three wars in the 1950s: in Malaya (now Malaysia), Kenya and Cyprus. It explores the motivations of key figures, the responses of the British colonial authorities and how these conflicts affected ordinary people. You’ll hear stories from people on different sides as they share their thoughts on the wars that shaped their lives. The exhibition also explores the British Government’s attempts to prevent documents relating to the conflicts from being published. In 2011, following a long battle by campaigners, the Government revealed that thousands of these files were still held in a secure archive. *Emergency Exits* helps unpick the path towards recognition in the UK. 🏺 Raiders of the Lost Egyptian Treasures @ The British Museum
🏺 Raiders of the Lost Egyptian Treasures @ The British Museum
Fancy a fun social **archaeological** adventure into the **Egyptian** temple? An expedition venturing into history, myth, and discovery at the Museum’s Egyptian galleries. We'll step into a world of monumental statues, hieroglyphs, and sarcophagi so **extraordinary** that even the most famous archaeologist of them all **-** Indiana Jones himself - might hesitate to enter! But no need for Indi - we'll become direct **raiders of knowledge**, uncovering the secrets of Egypt’s most extraordinary artifacts — no Lucas props, just authentic treasures that have captivated explorers, scholars, and adventurers for centuries. Yep - for thousands of years, Ancient Egypt bestowed extraordinary knowledge and innovation on the world - easily giving the big greek philosophers a run for their money! From **mathematics** to building those monumental structures and advanced **astronomy** to create calendars, they practiced **medicine** and mummification with remarkable skill. Their wisdom, traditions and emphasis on cosmic order influenced civilizations far beyond the Nile, leaving a legacy that still shapes how we understand science, culture, and history today We'll step into the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery and encounter monumental statues of pharaohs, sarcophagi, and hieroglyph‑covered stelae. Texts will help guide us through their hidden stories — from the Rosetta Stone to colossal busts of Ramesses II — revealing the real history behind treasures that could easily rival Dr Jones’s greatest finds. 🗝️ Lost Treasures Trail Following a themed trail through the galleries, we'll piece together clues among mummies, tomb goods, and temple carvings. Inspired by Indy’s relic hunts, this puzzle challenge is grounded in authentic archaeology, encouraging you to see the magnificent collections with your own eyes 🎩 Explorer’s Flair And to infuse some lighthearted fun into the journey - *Indiana Jones* style fedora hats and satchels are welcome! Feel free to strike a pose beside towering statues or ancient sarcophagi for **photo opportunities** blending cinematic fun with the awe of Egyptian relics. Impersonations of Indy welcome too - if yours is better than mine I buy you a drink! We will meet outside a tube station. More details to be updated. Lucas Stone Unmummified

Join us as we get together for an Oscar Watch film that’s also one of the year’s best: MARTY SUPREME! Timothee Chalamet delivers a “career-best performance” in this film that follows a young man with a dream no one respects, who goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness. Marty Supreme has already been named a Top 10 Film of the Year by IndieWire, Vulture, the BBC, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute and is well on its way to being one of the most nominated films at this year’s Oscars! Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: This ping pong drama is set in New York City during the 1950s where table tennis star Marty goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness. It is loosely based on the life of famed table tennis player Marty Reisman. The film is directed (and co-written) by Josh Safdie and stars Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYSHiII4D-Y EARLY BUZZ & REVIEWS: The film premiered to “overwhelmingly positive” reviews at this year’s New York Film Festival! Timothee Chalamet immediately shot to the top of the Best Actor race with a “career best performance” in a film described as an “awe inspiring cinematic tour-de-force!” Others call it, “an absolute blast of adrenaline” and a “pure delight,” “that soars from start to finish!” The film is earning a Certified Fresh 96% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where Variety calls it, “one of the year’s few masterpieces!” Slash Film declares, “This is unquestionably the best performance of Timothée Chalamet's career, and Marty Supreme is one of the best movies of the year. I can't wait to watch it again!” PLAN: For MARTY SUPREME at the Drexel, please purchase your ticket for the 3:30pm showing and we’ll meet in the lobby area between 3:10 and 3:20pm!
