Long Talk
Yanick Witschi: Loupe - A search engine with just PHP and SQLite
Ever wished full-text search in PHP was fast, local, and ridiculously simple? No containers to set up - just PHP and SQLite? In this talk I’ll take you behind the scenes of Loupe - how it works, why it’s blazing fast, and how you can add powerful search to your app in minutes!
Why would anyone be crazy enough to implement full-text search in PHP? This talk is the story of that “stupid idea” - and how it turned into Loupe.
I’ll start with the real-world problem that sparked the project: when existing search solutions felt too heavy or too expensive for my use case. From there, we’ll walk through the decision to build a search engine from scratch - what went wrong, what worked, and what I’ve learnt along the way.
Step by step, I’ll show how Loupe was built incrementally: from a tiny index, to fast queries, to surprisingly powerful features. We’ll dive into the heart of typo-tolerant search and unpack the algorithmic tricks that make it very fast, even on large datasets.
Whether you love search, PHP, algorithms - or bad ideas that somehow work - this talk is for you.
Short Talk
David Buchmann: Using postgis in postgres with the swiss buildings registry
Postgis is an extension for the postgres database to handle geographical data. This is not actually as complicated to use as it sounds - it gives you support for coordinates as column type, and allows to query for areas. I will explain the basics and show some examples how we use this in the Swiss Buildings API project.
20:00 Drinks and chat with the Symfony community.
Would you like to present something? Please contact david@liip.ch with your talk idea. This is a great opportunity to get first experiences in public speaking. We would love to have some first-time speakers present something. Talks can be about an aspect of Symfony, a project you did that involved Symfony, or some general web topic that could be of interest to developers working with Symfony. If you feel you need some support in preparing your talk, please reach out, there are people with experience in public speaking that will be happy to help. Talks can be held in English or German.
Please let us know if you plan to come.
