This is a conversation group for native speakers of Portuguese or English. You MUST be natively fluent in one language and at least basically conversational in the other.

Hi, please consider joining our group if you can converse in both English and Portuguese and are a native-level speaker or either language, and you would like to improve your skills and fluency with native speakers!
During the two-hour online meeting we alternate between the languages and maintain a policy of only speaking in the selected language. We don’t have predetermined discussion topics, so all members are encouraged to make suggestions. As well as the general discussion, we use “breakout rooms” for smaller groups to converse and give more speaking time to everyone.
So please request membership if this sounds like something useful and fun for you. Note that we can only approve your request if you confirm native level capability in either Portuguese or English and that you are conversant in the other language.

So we don't get lazy and everyone has a chance to practice, when we are speaking Portuguese we avoid English and vice-versa, only translating if we can't find another way to explain what we are saying

Para garantir que não ficamos preguiçosos e que todos têm a oportunidade de praticar a conversação na língua não-nativa, quando estamos na "hora portuguesa" evitamos o inglês e vice-versa. É muito raro fazermos excepção a esta regra, e tal só acontece se não conseguirmos encontrar uma outra forma qualquer de explicar o que queremos dizer.
3 EN: This is a non-commercial group
* The sessions are free, but we do have to pay the Meetup subscription. If you join any session during the year please contribute a minimum of €2 when we launch the crowdfunding each autumn. We open it on the renewal date just until we have enough for the meetup fee. Everything is done with total transparency, showing the names and amounts received. The organizers do not receive any kind of monetary benefit.
* We cannot accept advertising on the group, even if it is language-related. If you want to tell us what you do, please do so in person!

::> Who are English-Portuguese Conversation Lisbon?
We are all native or near-native speakers of either Portuguese or English (at least C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)*). This means that you can practice and improve from the living language in authentic accents, while helping others learn your mother tongue.

::> How does this conversation group help us to learn the language?
The areas you will improve most with us are listening and understanding, and speaking without fear of making mistakes. We all make lots of mistakes and try not to be shy about it, as it usually deepens the discussion and helps native and non-native speakers alike understand their languages and cultures better.
Although this group is not a means to learn basic Portuguese or English, it is the best way we know of to take your language from basic and halting to engaged and natural. We enjoy figuring out the intricacies and inconsistencies in our languages but we are not teachers. You can learn vocabulary and grammar in a more structured way from physical or online book and classroom study.
Our conversations are most useful for learners at or above the A2 level of the CEFR. This means you can follow the conversation, and contribute to it without interrupting it with too many questions.

As áreas são as da conversação: ouvir, compreender e falar. Todos cometemos erros, evitamos a timidez natural e aprofundamos a conversa.
Assim, ajudamos os não-nativos a compreenderem melhor a outra língua e

Este grupo não é para aprender português ou inglês básico. No entanto melhora os seus conhecimentos da língua não-nativa e aumenta a sua fluência. Os membros deste grupo não são professores mas são curiosos e interessados e gostam de descobrir os meandros e inconsistências da língua nativa e não-nativa. O estudo tradicional com livros e aulas ou on-line é o adequado para aprender vocabulário e gramática de uma forma mais estruturada.

::> How is it organised?
The format is simple: we alternate between chatting in Portuguese and in English (the order determined by whoever arrives first!). To hear the natural language it is important that the conversation can flow, so while questions and explanations are part of the conversation we avoid interrupting and translating.

The conversation takes us on a journey through our languages, our cultures, and topics of our interest through discussion, question & answer, language games, and more. There is no formal structure, but it's great when people bring along a topic, event, or query they have come across or would like to discuss.

A conversa leva-nos numa viagem pelas nossas línguas, as nossas culturas, e tópicos do nosso interesse através da discussão, perguntas e respostas, jogos linguísticos, e muito mais. Não existe uma estrutura formal, mas é óptimo quando as pessoas trazem consigo um tópico, evento, ou pergunta que tenham encontrado ou que gostariam de discutir.

You can join us online through the link shared on the event, but if you can get to the event location in Lisbon we would love to meet you in person! Check the event page for the current location, but it is always central and easily accessible by metro.

::> What if I can't make it on Tuesday evenings?
In addition to the regular session, we arrange a monthly 'Language through Culture' event, usually at the weekend or on a different evening. Past events have included museum visits, cinema, culinary events, scrabble picnic in the park, and pub quizzes.
If you'd like to suggest something we'd love to hear your ideas! The events are related to language or culture, and should be accessible geographically (by public transport in/from Lisbon) and financially so anyone interested can join in.

Para além da sessão regular, organizamos um evento mensal "Língua através da Cultura", geralmente ao fim-de-semana ou numa noite diferente. Os eventos passados incluíram visitas a museus, cinema, eventos culinários, piqueniques no parque, e jogos, quer em jardins quer em bares.
Se desejar sugerir algo, gostaríamos de ouvir as suas sugestões e ideias! Os eventos são relacionados com a língua e cultura, e devem ser acessíveis geograficamente (por transportes públicos em/de Lisboa) e gratuitos, ou muito acessíveis, para que qualquer pessoa interessada possa participar.
