ð Cleanse Away the First Half of the Year and Welcome the Next Six Months with Positive Energy! â©ïž
ð International meetup at a café and walking
Would you like to experience a unique Japanese tradition that even many Japanese people rarely have the chance to join?
In this special event, we will visit Torigoe Jinja, a historic shrine with over 1,400 years of history, and take part in Nagoshi no Oharae, one of Japanâs most important summer purification rituals.
Nagoshi no Oharae is an ancient Japanese ceremony held at the end of June to cleanse away the spiritual impurities and misfortunes accumulated during the first half of the year and to pray for good health, happiness, and good fortune for the months ahead.
â First, we'll meet at a café!
Enjoy English conversation and international exchange in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Whether you're joining for the first time or coming alone, you'll find it easy to connect with others and make new friends. ð
ð¶ââïžð¶ââïž Then we'll walk to Torigoe Shrine.
The Torigoe and Asakusabashi area still preserves the charm of old Tokyo, with historic streets, traditional architecture, and a nostalgic downtown atmosphere. Enjoy discovering this hidden side of Tokyo as we stroll through the neighborhood together.
â©ïž At 8:00 PM, we will join the Nagoshi no Oharae ceremony at Torigoe Shrine. Participants can walk through a large sacred grass ring called a Chinowa, a traditional purification ritual believed to remove misfortune and bring good luck, health, and happiness for the rest of the year.

â
ð Nagoshi no Oharae (Summer Purification Ceremony)
This is a traditional Japanese ritual held around June 30 each year. It is performed to cleanse away the spiritual impurities (kegare) and misfortunes accumulated during the first half of the year, and to pray for good health, peace, and good fortune during the remaining six months. Together with the year-end purification ceremony held in December, it is known as Oharae (the Great Purification Ritual).
At Torigoe Jinja, a large sacred grass ring called a Chinowa is set up within the shrine grounds. Visitors walk through the ring as part of a purification ritual believed to remove misfortune and impurities while bringing health, happiness, and good fortune.
Another important tradition is the Hitogata Nagashi (Paper Doll Floating Ritual). Participants transfer their impurities and misfortunes to a paper figure called a Hitogata (or Katashiro) for an offering of approximately Â¥500âÂ¥1,000. The paper figures are then released into the Sumida River as a prayer for health, safety, and protection from misfortune.
â
ð End (9:00 PM)
The nearest station is JR Asakusabashi Station. ð
