Dear Enneagram Group,

  • In January, we'll tackle something new - a discussion of the large collection of character-sketches presented in the books of Robert Greene about how to manage power. Greene created something of a stir in recent years with his book The 48 Laws of Power (Viking/Penguin, 1998), featuring a Machiavellian world-view richly illustrated with historical winners and losers. We'll talk about that book, and his more recent The Laws of Human Nature (Viking/Penguin, 2018), which reprises some of the same themes with longer sketches and a broader gambit.
  • No advance prep is needed, but attendees are encouraged to take a brief advance preview of these books, using the following links:
  • The 48 Laws of Power (1998): https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_48_Laws_Of_Power/P_zMW3EHnTEC
representative excerpt: use above link, click on simulated (red) book-cover, then scroll to pages 19-20 and read short (~1page) sections "Observance of the Law" and "Interpretation" re Otto von Bismarck - (this is part of the larger section on "Law 3: Conceal your Intentions")
  • The Laws of Human Nature (2018): https://www.google.com/books/edition/_/uD9wDwAAQBAJ
  • I (Nicholas) will discuss the following Enneagram-related theme in relation to Greene's work: aspects of the Type Eight persona, as illustrated with several examples from the ancient world.
  • Group member Neil Bhattacharya will also present on some selected sketches.
  • If there is interest, we may continue with further discussion of this material in for one or more additional sessions.

Hope you choose to attend, please do RSVP.
Regards,
Nicholas
