The Salinas River flows north-west from the Los Machos Hills of the Los Padres National Forest to the Salinas Valley and then north to Monterey Bay where it connects to the Pacific Ocean. It is the longest river in the Central Coast region of California, flowing 175 miles. River clean ups along the banks of the Salinas River helps this wildlife corridor remain healthy and reduces the trash and plastic flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
The name for the Salinas River in the Rumsen Language is ua kot taiauačorx. The Rumsen language is one of eight Ohlone languages that was spoken from Pajaro River to Point Sur, as well as on the Salinas and Carmel Rivers. The Ohlone are the Native American people of the Northern California coast from the San Francisco Bay through Monterey Bay to the lower Salinas Valley.
