The Beaver Mountain Trail is located on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park near the Deer Mountain trailhead. This winter hike is a moderately challenging 4.5-mile loop with an elevation gain of 849’. Depending on the trail conditions, we will probably tack on an extra mile once we get to the Ute Trail intersection and explore that trail as an out-and-back option which makes this a 6.5-mile hike. The elevation at the TH is 8,900’ therefore this is not a hike for beginners. Be mentally and physically prepared to hike at a moderate pace with micro spikes and go the distance. Please do not sign up for this this hike if you are unable to hike in the snow at high altitude.
We will rendezvous at 8:00 AM in the parking lot of JAX which is located at 2665 W. Eisenhower in Loveland. From there, we will carpool to the Deer Mountain TH which is a few miles west of the Beaver Meadows entrance. If you are a passenger, bring cash and chip in for gas. Once we get to the trailhead, we will hike at a moderate pace and explore the area around Beaver Mountain. We will hike as a group at all times and take multiple breaks as needed.
I will pack a first-aid kit; however, I’m not a paramedic. I will do all I can to support you if there is an accident but you must accept the risk that comes with hiking in a remote wilderness area. This includes encounters with animals and unforeseen injuries. It is not my intent to discourage anyone. By signing up for this hike, you accept that risk and relieve the event host of any responsibility for accidents and personal injury during this hike which includes transportation to and from the trailhead.
What to bring? Micro spikes, warm boots and hiking poles are gear essentials. I also recommend layering with long and short sleeve dry fit type t-shirts under a winter jacket. In addition to those essentials, bring a small backpack so you can shed layers as it warms up, gloves or mittens, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, favorite snacks, plenty of water and your desire to enjoy life with others in the great outdoors. Finally, we will probably stop for lunch in Estes Park after the hike to relax and refuel.
