HIKING THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS, NORWAY (AUGUST 2 - 9)

Accommodation - twin share rooms - 4 nights in a hotel and 3 nights in 'rorbuer' (renovated traditional fishermen’s cabins).

The Lofoten Islands, renowned for their breath-taking natural beauty, are an archipelago located off the northeast coast of Norway, 300 km above the Arctic Circle. The main islands are connected by bridges, with some smaller islands reachable by ferry.

At 68 degrees north, the Lofoten Islands are around the same latitude as Greenland, but the islands enjoy a much milder climate thanks to the warm Gulf Stream.

Famous for its dramatic mountains, deep fjords, white sandy beaches, colourful fishing villages and turquoise waters, these Norwegian islands offer some of the most stunning hiking experiences in the world.

Our plan is to explore some of the best trails and iconic viewpoints on the islands, from the island’s capital, Svolvær, in the north, to Reine, Lofoten's most picturesque fishing village, in the south and beyond.

Hiking through unparalleled scenery, we will enjoy dramatic routes to summits and vantage points with spectacular panoramas of jagged islands set in a turquoise sea. We'll also have the opportunity to see some of the islands' most picturesque fishing towns and pristine beaches.

ACCOMMODATION:

In Svolvær we will spend 4 nights in twin rooms in a centrally located 3-star hotel with self catering facilities.

Our last 3 nights will be spent in the iconic Eliassen Rorbuer in Hamnøy, the picture perfect postcard of the Lofoten Islands. Our self catering 2-bedroom cabins here are shared between 4 people (2 bunk beds per bedroom).

ITINERARY:

• Sat 02/08 - Arrival in Svolvær, check-in from 3PM
• Sun 03/08 - Hike Fløya (590m) and Djevelporten, time permitting hike Tjeldbergtind or Tuva and/or visit Kabelvåg
• Mon - 04/08 - Hike Festvågtinden (541m) and visit the picturesque fishing village of Henningsvær with its iconic football field
• Tue 05/08 - Free day - optional activities (at extra cost) include: boat trip to the famous Trollfjord, kayaking, ferry trip to Skrova island, other local hikes
• Wed - 06/08 - Private transfer to Hamnøy with a short stop at the beautiful Haukland beach. Afternoon hike to Reinebringen (484m)
• Thu 07/08 - Hike to Munkebu and Munken (769m)
• Fri 08/08 - Hike to the spectacular Kvalvika beach and Ryten (543m)
• Sat 09/08 - Trip finish, check out by 11AM

All hikes are subject to change due to weather & other factors.

DIFFICULTY:

Hikes on this trip will be demanding with significant elevation to be tackled over short distances. The steep, rugged nature of the islands, with rocky, boggy and slippery trails means this trip is best suited to fit and experienced hikers. You will need the fitness to cover 10 miles with 1000m of ascent and descent in a day. A head for heights is needed as there will be some exposed sections.

• 7 nights twin share accommodation - 4 nights hotel (breakfast incl), 3 nights in 'rorbuer' (2-bedroom cabins shared between 4 people, each bedroom has 2 bunk beds)

• Any other meals not specified (restaurants/supermarkets are nearby and self catering facilities available in both places)
• Flights & airport transfers (see below)
• Any other transport to/from hikes not mentioned above - we aim to take local buses for some hikes, however some additional short taxi journeys may be required if buses do not work out for any reason

FLIGHTS & AIRPORT TRANSFERS:

In order to get to the trip start in Svolvær, you can either fly to Bodø or Harstad/Narvik (Evenes) Airport which both can be reached from the UK with a stopover in Oslo. Direct flights from Oslo to Svolvær are also available but pricey.

From Bodø, Svolvær can be reached by a short 25 min plane ride or 3,5 hour (evening) ferry. From Harstad/Narvik it's a 2,5 hour bus ride to Svolvær.

When the trip finishes, it will be easy to catch a 3,5 hour ferry from Moskenes (20 min by bus) back to Bodø.

The organiser will share detailed information about flight options and transfers with those signed up to the trip.
