How can we effectively govern artificial intelligence?
Details
It is generally accepted that global issues like climate change and fast-spreading pandemics present catastrophic risks to humanity. But there is potentially an even bigger risk that has received far less international attention: misaligned artificial intelligence.
We've already seen how disruptive technologies such as ChatGPT can be for society, and this is only predicted to scale dramatically over the coming years. But beyond this immediate impact, creating agents with an intelligence superior to our own evokes some far more urgent questions: What will happen to humans once we're no longer the most intelligent entities on earth? Will the goals of AI be aligned with our own? Or will we lose control of our destiny?
Our speakers come from a background of cutting edge AI alignment theory research, security & technology, and international relations:
- Dr. Adrià Garriga Alonso (PhD in Machine Learning, University of Cambridge; M.Sc. in Computer Science, University of Oxford; BSc Computer Science, Universitat Pompeu Fabra) is currently working on deep learning interpretability research at FAR AI, a research organization in California. His goal is to prevent existential risks from AI.
- Martin Soto (M.Sc. in Pure & Applied Logic, University of Barcelona; Double B.A. in Mathematics & Physics, University of Barcelona) is an independent researcher in AI alignment, focussed on reducing suffering risks. He has collaborated with the Machine Intelligence Research Institute and the Center on Long-Term Risk.
- Guillem Bas (M.A. in Security & Technology, National School of Political Science and Public Administration; B.A. in International Relations, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), is responsible for Policy Transfer at Riesgos Catastróficos Globales. His main area of interest is the governance of AI in the near and long term future.
Together they will present a compelling case for possibly the most urgent dilemma of our time: How can we effectively govern artificial intelligence?
