We approach the theme, read a short text (you get a copy for the session), speak, learn vocabulary and things about French culture. The theme is always linked to French, the French and France. At the end, we wrap up and keep a few minutes for some miscellaneous questions. After the class, you will get an email with a list of vocabulary (some words / expressions seen along the class). This is a very small group class: maximum of 4 attendees and a minimum of 2. So you will speak directly to the tutor. SPECIAL: Leading Creative Writing Tutor & Author Julia Bell
SPECIAL: Leading Creative Writing Tutor & Author Julia Bell
For this online talk we welcome Julia Bell. Julia is a novelist, essayist and Professor of New Writing at Birkbeck, University of London. Julia brings a unique and inspiring understanding of creative writing and the value of writing together, even more so in the times we are living. She will give a 30-minute talk and then answer questions. Please see below about how to join this free, online event. Her talk is entitled: **Writing and Thinking Together** The context for her talk is: *At a moment when technology has created collective ADD (smartphones reducing attention by 39%), when adult education funding has dropped 45%, and when evening courses are disappearing, what happens when we lose the spaces where people sit together and practice thinking collectively? Julia has taught creative writing for 25 years to working adults - refugees processing war trauma, Brexit casualties navigating displacement, incels, students confronting structural racism, among many others. She argues that the writing workshop is one of the last spaces where we practice collective attention, empathy and democratic thinking in an age of algorithmic isolation.* And a note about some of Julia's published work: *Her new book, 'Between the Lines - a live-action classroom on the page' - is published by Simon & Schuster in May 2026. Her essay 'Radical Attention' is being reissued this summer with a new introduction by Grace Blakeley.* **How do I join this online event?** Simply write to me, Caprice Jackson, Queer Write's convenor, on this platform and I will send you the link. …go to Edinburgh for Beltane!
…go to Edinburgh for Beltane!
Beltane is a living, breathing reimagining of an ancient Iron Age Celtic celebration, retold through modern performance and community ritual. Since 1988, the Beltane Fire Society has gathered thousands to witness the timeless story of the May Queen and the Green Man (spirit and body, world and self) entwined in an eternal dance. This year’s Beltane asks us to remember what happens when those forces drift out of alignment. The May Queen is the world spirit, present in all things, illuminating and connecting. The Green Man is the living earth: the air, the water, the fire, the energy that binds us. They are inseparable, yet in a world of constant distraction, extraction, and division, we can forget this truth, losing our sense of agency and connection. Through fire and performance, we explore what it means to realign, to listen again, to act from love and solidarity, and to remember that change is possible when we stand together. As the May Queen guides and the Green Man learns to listen, their reunion becomes a story of active hope: a reminder that when body and spirit move as one, our collective power is limitless. Along the Hill, you’ll encounter drummers, dancers, fire-players, acrobats, musicians, and a host of mythic characters, all weaving a shared story of renewal and resistance, joy and responsibility. Beltane 2026 is an invitation to remember who we are, what we value, and who we might yet become. Bring your fire. Bring your voice. Together, let us tell a story of alignment, connection, and a kinder, fairer world. Total anticipated cost £50.38 Beltane Festival tickets can be purchased using the link below (cost if £16.38) https://www.citizenticket.com/events/beltane-fire-society/beltane-fire-festival-2026/ Cheapest flights are listed at £34. Queer Spirit Full Moon Beltane Circle
Queer Spirit Full Moon Beltane Circle
THIS MONTH FEATURING A PERFORMANCE OF HEALING SONGS WRITTEN RECENTLY IN INDIA FROM PENELOPE VIVERO Radical Faeries and Queer Spirits gather in south London at the Beltane Full Moon, a time when the veils are thin and nature spirits close. Taurus Sun and Scorpio Moon bring our attention to the union of matter and spirit, making Beltane a celebration of Life itself - long celebrated in pre-Christian Britain, Beltane may pole dances remained common in Britain until the 17th century. Radical Faeries have been part of the modern pagan reclaiming of the wild and free spirit of Beltane in our sanctuaries since the 1980s. Let's bring some of that Faerie Liberation to central London! Before we DANCE we will EARTH OURSELVES THROUGH HEALING SONGS FROM PENELOPE VIVERO - starting 8pm. Penelope Vivero, radical faerie devotional folk artist will take us on a musical healing journey, moving between stillness, deep feeling, and moments of joy and connection through song. After spending time in India, she has written a new body of work which she will be sharing for the first time at this gathering. We gather from 7 to set up the space and greet each other, cast a circle at 8pm for the healing journey after which we drum, dance, socialise and play through the evening. There's lots of drums and percussion to share around, you are welcome to bring your own instruments too, your own refreshments and maybe snacks to share. Documentary: Amu Darya—Uzbekistan
Join us for a special screening of *Amu Darya: River to a Missing Sea*, followed by a Q&A, a powerful documentary exploring the environmental and human stories surrounding the shrinking Amu Darya River. Once feeding the Aral Sea, this great Central Asian River has been dramatically depleted due to large-scale Soviet irrigation policies, transforming what was once the world’s fourth-largest lake into the youngest desert on Earth. Through personal testimonies from Uzbek and Karakalpak communities, the film shares oral histories of an ancient ecosystem—telling intimate stories of loss, adaptation, resilience, and hope as life continues to unfold along the river that now flows toward a missing sea. Contra dance with Big Scioty May 2 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
**Caller: Richard Ades** **Band: The McKenzies** **Clinton Heights Lutheran Church** **15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
