Speed Speaking for Confident Communication
Speed Speaking for Confident Communication
At our **Speed Speaking** event, we come together in a cosy circle, taking turns responding to quick, playful, and thought-provoking prompts, ranging from lighthearted questions to unexpected twists that spark curiosity and smiles. We begin with gentle breathing or simple improv exercises to help everyone relax, feel present, and connect with the group. You’ll have up to two minutes per turn, just enough time to express yourself without pressure, so everyone gets multiple chances to step up and speak. Each round brings a fresh topic and an easy invitation to share. There’s no overthinking and no pressure to perform, just authentic moments and genuine voices. This is a space where you don’t need to be “good” or get anything right. It’s about enjoying the experience, exploring your voice, and connecting with others in a warm, supportive atmosphere. You’re free to jump in and share, or simply listen and take in the energy. Either way, you’ll be surrounded by laughter, kindness, and a welcoming sense of community. Along the way, you’ll naturally build confidence in public speaking through relaxed, human conversations, without it ever feeling forced. You’ll leave feeling lighter, more at ease expressing yourself, and more confident using your voice both on stage and in everyday life. Come for the conversation, stay for the connection, and leave with a stronger, more confident voice. As our event is kindly hosted by the pub, we warmly encourage everyone to support the venue by purchasing a drink before this session. Your contribution helps us continue using this welcoming space and keeps these gatherings possible for everyone. Kindly RSVP in good time and keep your attendance status up to date. As we’re limited to a maximum of 20 participants, this helps us manage the space and offer spots to others who’d love to join. If you enjoy being here and find something meaningful in this event, you can always support me by leaving a little something 💛☕ No pressure at all, just your presence means a lot. But if you’d like to help me keep creating and hosting more moments like this, I truly appreciate it. Thank you for being part of this! Stages, Plots and City Edges: A Walk through Hoxton and Shoreditch
Stages, Plots and City Edges: A Walk through Hoxton and Shoreditch
Hoxton and Shoreditch are known today for their lively atmosphere, filled with restaurants, bars, and nightlife—perhaps a legacy of their historic position just beyond the jurisdiction of the City of London. Yet beneath this modern energy lies a rich and layered past. Shoreditch dates back to at least 1148, and its name is thought to derive from “sewage ditch,” possibly linked to the River Walbrook. Hoxton was originally part of this area. Shoreditch was home to a monastery from the 12th century until its dissolution under Henry VIII in 1539. By the late 16th century, Shoreditch had become a cradle of English theatre. It was here that the first permanent playhouses in England were established. On this walk, we visit the sites of **The Theatre** and the **Curtain Theatre**, both closely associated with William Shakespeare, who worked there as an actor and playwright after arriving in London in his twenties. The actor-manager James Burbage famously dismantled The Theatre following a lease dispute and transported its timbers across the Thames to build the Globe. The route then leads to Hoxton Square, scene of a dramatic duel between a playwright and an actor—just one of many stories of rivalry and intrigue that echo through these streets. As we continue, we encounter historic houses, pubs, a cinema, and a library, before arriving at the George and Vulture pub—said to have welcomed figures such as Kate Moss and Jarvis Cocker. In Hoxton, we pass the former home of William Parker, a key figure in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, as well as Cooke’s Eel and Pie Shop, serving since 1860. Returning toward Shoreditch, the walk takes in the Geffrye Museum, housed in almshouses dating from 1714, the entrance to the Columbia Road Flower Market, and the historic church of St Leonard’s. We also explore Arnold Circus and the Boundary Estate—an ambitious housing development completed in 1900—before making our way back to Shoreditch High Street. Along the way, we note the Bishopsgate Goods Yard and Norton Folgate, sites that speak to the area’s industrial and commercial past. We conclude at the Light Bar for a drink and further conversation. The walk covers approximately 7–8 km. Participants join and walk at their own responsibility.
SLITHER (2006) + DRINKS @ PCC
SLITHER (2006) + DRINKS @ PCC
Details on getting tickets for Slither + pre drinks below. PREMISE Slither takes place in a quiet South Carolina town where a meteorite containing an alien parasite crash lands, eventually infecting local resident Grant Grant (played by Gunn mainstay Michael Rooker, and no, Grant Grant is not a typo). The creature gradually takes over Grant’s body and mind, who is compelled to feast on raw meat and infect others. Grant’s wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks) and the town sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) eventually tie several disappearances to him, though nothing can prepare them for what they discover. James Gunn never truly achieved large-scale audience recognition until his revered work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy film, which owes its success first and foremost to Gunn’s style and vision, seamlessly combining dark, irreverent humour, action and emotional depth. However, Slither is Gunn’s directorial debut, and thus is the first time he proved himself to be a one-two-punch auteur whose snappy writing pairs well with his directorial sensibilities, proving that he was producing the goods long before Guardians catapulted him to the upper echelons of mainstream cinema. Perhaps the most notable distinction from his major budget work with Marvel and Slither is the latter’s unabashed B-movie undertones. I am hesitant to label this a zombie movie, yet there is a touch of the mad scientist to Gunn as he splices hints of Roger Corman’s deliberate schlock with George A. Romero’s approach to the undead. However, unlike Romero’s best works, thematic subtext can get somewhat lost in the mix as I could only pick up on allusions to domestic abuse, which even then lacks the necessary conviction. It is instead Gunn’s comprehension of his characters, and the situations in which they find themselves, that is one of his best assets as a filmmaker. With surprising patience for a comedy horror, Gunn dials up the obscene notch by notch until it reaches eleven, at which point Fillion’s Bill dryly remarks “Well now, that is some fucked up shit.” At that very moment, Gunn’s character echoed what I, and likely many other audience members, were thinking, proving that he is indeed on a similar wavelength to his target audience, something I greatly admire in any filmmaker. However, occasionally flat cinematography can distract from the otherwise gleeful horror onscreen, perhaps the only aspect of Slither which veers all too close to the B-movies it seeks to emulates, though it is forgivably offset by sharply written characters and an impressive cast. Take Michael Rooker’s Grant, who is an undeniable jerk, yet Gunn’s sympathetic framing of the character adds depth you simply would not find in a B-movie lacking any sense of nuance. Meanwhile, Edmonton native Nathan Fillion shows impressive comedic timing while proving that he has the chops to lead a film on the big screen, which makes his diminished presence in films over the years even more baffling. Slither is a horror film which showcases all the best hallmarks of James Gunn as a filmmaker, albeit in a manner less refined than his best work on Guardians of the Galaxy. While the influence of genre greats are obvious, Gunn’s directorial debut is nonetheless a marriage of comedy and horror that is all its own, whilst delivering the absurd with the emotional in a manner you don’t often see, but is sure to split some sides…though hopefully not as literally as in the film ([https://hnmag.ca/review/slither-review/](https://hnmag.ca/review/slither-review/)) TRAILER [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI0BcgVdSWg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI0BcgVdSWg) CINEMA TICKETS £14 regular or £11 for PCC members. Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Join us as we get together for a Discount Tuesday / Choose Your Movie event to see your choice of two great new films! Option 1 (and the one I'll be seeing) is the top-reviewed comedy-drama, THE CHRISTOPHERS! The film is set in the art world and follows the estranged children of a former artist who hire a forger. It is directed by Steven Soderberg, stars Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel and has been earning rave reviews on the indie circuit. Option 2 is the latest action-thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL! The film follows a temporary small-town sheriff who uncovers dark mysteries after a local bank robbery. Here are descriptions, trailers and our plan for this event: THE CHRISTOPHERS: The children of a once famous artist hire a forger to complete some unfinished, long ago abandoned canvases so they'll have a better inheritance when he dies. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning and James Corden. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film is earning an excellent 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics call it a “dynamic, emotional and surprising journey” and a “compelling chamber piece that works like intellectual comfort food.” Others call the film, an “incredibly funny, comedy drama with plot reversals that make it feel like it’s on the verge of a thriller!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H79-EqzmdwY&t=20s NORMAL: This action-crime-thriller follows a man who comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota to serve as the temporary sheriff. But a bank robbery leads him to a criminal underground reaches throughout the entire town. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley and stars Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. The film comes from the same team that brought us Nobody and the John Wick series, so expect an over-the-top, action-filled thrill ride! TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmm-lM33Qw0&t=19s PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing of both films and will meet in the lobby area about 30 minutes before showtime. Once showtimes are announced, advance ticket purchase is advised (GFC website preferred)! Please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event. Showtimes and complete details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer. PARKING: Close, convenient parking is available in the nearby garage (located between 9th and 11th, just off High St). Bring your ticket with you and have it validated at the theater and for $2, you’re covered for the night! Look forward to seeing you there, Dan

With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1 week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve. Contra dance with Big Scioty April 11 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
**Caller: Kim Thompson** **Band: Full Moon Country Dance Orchestra** **Clinton Heights Lutheran Church** **15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
