Join us for Monday morning coffee, crafting and conversation! Bring what ever portable project you are working on. If you are new to the craft there are usually folks to help you learn. There are a variety of coffee and tea items and a tiny selection of pastry items.
Pineview Coffee Company is a small yet spacious coffee shop on the 1st floor inside the Aspen Lake Amenity building. There is only a small sign by the door that has the name of the coffee shop so it can be a little challenging to find.
Hope to see you there!

Let's speak Japanese! 日本語を話そう!
ATTENTION: Please RSVP at least one day before the event!
Sometimes this event is moved to private residences, and we don't want to strand anyone.
Because our normal meeting places in Georgetown are closing earlier, this week's meeting will be in Round Rock at Fujiya Ramen Sushi Bar in the Round Rock strip map near HEB.
Since we are inside a business, it's polite to purchase something from the establishment. You may check out the menu at:
https://www.fujiyaramensushi.com
We are open to speakers of many levels, including beginners, but to get the most out of meeting, you should know hiragana (and hopefully katakana).
A great book for self study is Kazki Watanabe's "Japanese For Dogs".

Meteor Shower - Quadrantids - Dec. 26 to Jan. 16 2026 - Personal Activity
You do not need to sign up for this event. It is a placeholder only.
This is a personal challenge activity. If you have questions, need help, or want to organize with other members feel free to post comments below.
The American Meteor Society has this to say...
The Quadrantids have the potential to be the strongest shower of the year but usually fall short due to the short length of maximum activity (6 hours) and the poor weather experienced during early January. The average hourly rates one can expect under dark skies is 25. These meteors usually lack persistent trains but often produce bright fireballs. Due to the high northerly declination (celestial latitude) these meteors are not well seen from the southern hemisphere. Predictions for 2026 show a peak near 00:36 UT on January 4th. This timing favors Asia..Activity will be severely compromised in 2026 as a full moon occurs on January 3rd.
**Shower details** - **[Radiant](https://www.imo.net/resources/glossary/#Radiant):** 15:20 +49.7° - **[ZHR](https://www.imo.net/resources/glossary/#ZHR):** 120 - **Velocity:** 25 miles/sec (medium - 40.4km/sec) - **Parent Object:** 2003 EH (Asteroid)
**Next Peak** \- The Quadrantids will next peak on the Jan 3\-4\, 2026 night\. On this night\, the moon will be 100% full\.
AMS Meteor Shower Calendar -- https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/
Nature Nerds of Austin has this to say...
"Where is a good place to see the meteor shower?"
Good question, the darker the better. For the Austin area going either E or W will provide darker skies. I'd suggest looking at a light pollution map to help focus on areas as well.
https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/ https://darksitefinder.com/
https://www.cleardarksky.com/maps/lp/large_light_pollution_map.html
https://djlorenz.github.io/astronomy/lp2006/overlay/dark.html
https://www.darkskymap.com/
Because meteor showers are pieces of rock and dust on an orbit that intersects Earth's orbit at some point in time and space the best time to pick as the middle of your observing window is 2am local. This is because of the way the sun, the earth, and the meteor shower interact. From sundown to 2am the light gets progressively darker and after 2am it gets progressively lighter until you hit sunrise.
You'll want a good low sitting chair that has a lot of lean back. You basically want to lay back and just stare at the sky unfocused until you see an event. They can last from very short blips to long streaks lasting several seconds. If you're lucky you'll see an air burst where a large bolide comes apart in a shower, they are extremely rare.
The best binoculars to use for stargazing are 25x70 but smaller ones will work. Larger ones have too much magnification and there is a lot of jitter just from your natural body motion so the image is not stable. Binoculars are not a lot of use for meteor showers.
The two best places to get basic information are IMO and AMS.

AMS Shower Calendar -- https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/
Austin Astronomical Society (AAS) - They have many activities through the year. Consider becoming a member. -- https://austinastro.org/
You should also use Stellarium to help map out the date/time/and sky position of the expected source of the shower for a given date. BE ADVISED meteor showers are EXTREMELY UNPREDICTABLE. So don't expect to go out there and see something in the first 15 minutes. You could be out there all night and not see anything. Other nights you may get lucky and see a shower that has a high rate.
Stellarium has the ability to turn the screen red so you can keep it live if you have a laptop at your observing site.

6.6-mile Brushy Creek Regional Trail Evening Hike @ Cedar Park [🔦 Recommended!]
Join us for our **recurring** scenic **6.6-mile (10.6-km)** evening at the Brushy Creek Regional Trail in Cedar Park!
We’ll take a relaxed pace through one of the city’s most beautiful trails. The hike should take about **2 hours**.
**ℹ️ Additional info**
The purpose of this specific event is to have a recurring way for us to meet relatively easily. I want to make sure that recurring events are a "low effort" commitment, ie you don't have to drive 2 hours to get there. In the future once we have more organizers I plan to have more recurring events scheduled so we can cover a larger area.
Also, you may have noticed that **this event has an RSVP limit**. This is done for multiple reasons. Not only to ensure that a large group is not disruptive to the rest of the Austin community on the trail, but also to allow us to prioritize the "meetup" experience for every attendee, as having +60 people may be overwhelming, and ultimately the goal of this group is to build a community, not just a collection of individuals that like a specific trail.
**📍 Where to Meet**
2310 Brushy Creek Rd, Cedar Park, TX 78613
Google Maps **exact meeting spot link**:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/79KfLDsggDVKNfhy8
Route on **AllTrails**:
[Will be added in the future]
**🅿️ Parking**
Parking is available directly at the parking lot close to where we'll meet. There will be enough space for everyone.
**ℹ️ Recommendations**
* Bring good shoes (Although the terrain isn't challenging and relatively flat)
* Pack some water (More than you need, just in case)
* Bring a friend! (That's my attempt at a shameless self-promo for the group. Although even if you don't, I am confident that you'll get along great with the people you'll meet at the event!)
* A flashlight! Your phone is better than nothing, but a dedicated flashlight would only be of benefit of you as the sun sets!
**👍 Good to know**
* 🐶 Dog-friendly
* 👨👩👧 Family-friendly
* ♿ Wheelchair accessible
**Event Etiquette (Important!)**
* If you RSVP'd, but are unable to make it, please update your attendance as soon as possible. The attendance limit prevents new people from joining if we're at capacity otherwise. If we notice a pattern of you RSVPing to events and not showing up, you will be kicked from this group.
* Please show up on time. We will start right at the indicated event time. This is to respect everyones time. If you're a few minutes late, it should not be an issue as the "intro" to the event may take 15 minutes or so, but we will not delay the start until you get there.
* Other than that, I know all of you will help me make this group great for everyone. So thanks in advance for that!
**Event itinerary**
Below is the general outline of how the events are going to function
* Updates since last event
* Official introductions of everyone
* Icebreaker question
* The event itself
* After event:
* (As needed) Updates for next event(s)
* Exchange goodbyes
**🙂 I want your feedback!**
I am working on making this description as informative as possible, if anything is missing, you have any recommendations or there are errors/mistakes, please reach out to me, thanks!
Recovery Works (Hybrid)
**This is a HYBRID meeting, offered online and in-person.**
The Recovery Works support group is an All-Recovery meeting focused on supporting the Black and African American community in recovery. This meeting offers a safe space for members of the Black and African American community to come together and discuss challenges that they may face in caring for their mental health and maintaining their recovery, as well as celebrate their victories, share resources and make healthy connections.
This is an open meeting to the community, focused on supporting the black community in recovery.

Wild Ones: Annual Native Seed Swap
Wild Ones: Annual Native Seed Swap
January 10, 2026 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Join Wild Ones Columbus for their annual native seeds swap. If you have native seeds to share, please label them with the Latin name and common name. The seeds don’t need to be removed from the seed head if you aren’t sure how to do it, but remove as much stem as possible.
Bringing seeds is not required. Bring bags or envelopes to store seeds.
Inniswood Metro Gardens
940 S. Hempstead Rd.
Westerville, OH 43081
Phone (614)895-6216
This event will be held in the Greenhouse/Multipurpose Building located near the east end of the parking lot. Click here to see the Inniswood map.
If you have native seeds to share, label each species with this information:
* Botanical Name
* Common Name
Species we will accept:
* Species native to our ecoregion (8.2.4) - Best
* Species native to Ohio and surrounding states - Good
* Straight species only - no cultivars.
The seeds don’t need to be removed from the seed head if you aren’t sure how to do it, but don’t leave much stem on the seed heads.
Please email the list of species to Mary May so we can prepare information for attendees. You can bring the seeds on the day of the swap, or we can arrange to have them picked up beforehand - just let her know in the email.
If you don’t have any seeds to bring, no worries. If you are new to native plants or didn't have time to collect seeds, there are ALWAYS plenty from those that do bring them! We love to see "newbies" at our seed exchange! Also, remember to bring something to put seeds in such as envelopes, paper bags or containers.
Leave the Past Behind, Burning Bowl Ceremony at Unity of Columbus
As we prepare to enter a new year, the Burning Bowl Ceremony offers a powerful and heartfelt opportunity to let go of what no longer serves us and make space for new beginnings.
You are warmly invited to join us for this sacred and reflective ritual. The Burning Bowl Ceremony is a beloved Unity tradition—an empowering moment where we release old patterns, worries, or limiting beliefs by writing them down and symbolically releasing them into the flame. This act of letting go opens the door to clarity, peace, and transformation.
White Stone Ceremony – A New Name, A New Beginning
You are invited to participate in one of Unity’s most meaningful and empowering traditions—the **White Stone Ceremony**. As we enter a new year, this sacred ritual gives you the opportunity to listen within, connect with Spirit, and claim a new name or intention for your life.
In ancient times, receiving a white stone symbolized freedom, new identity, and fresh possibility. Today, we continue that tradition by holding a smooth white stone, entering a quiet meditation, and allowing Spirit to reveal a word, name, or message that reflects who you are becoming.
Latin City Wednesdays
The Biggest Salsa Night to hit your mid-week is happening at Latin City Wednesdays. Get the feel of the Latin Beat as your hips and feet groove the right way. As always, we will provide refreshments and hors d'oeuvres.

Contra dance with Big Scioty on Jan 3 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Gaye Fifer**
**Band: Hot Coffee Breakdown**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
