Python Game Workshop #2 — Organizing Your Game with Functions
[French version below]
In our first workshop, we built Mouse vs Cheese — a keyboard-controlled terminal game where a mouse navigates a grid to reach the cheese 🧀. If you missed it, no worries! We'll get you up to speed in the first 10 minutes.
Right now, the game works, but the code is written as one long sequence of instructions. Everything happens in the same place, which makes it harder to read, reuse, and improve.
In this session, we'll refactor the game by organizing the code into functions. This will make the program clearer, more modular, and easier to extend.
By the end of the workshop:
* The game will allow you to play again without restarting the script
* The code will be split into small, reusable functions
* You'll see how organizing code properly makes programs easier to maintain and grow
👉 This is Session 2 of an ongoing Python Game Workshop series, but it stands completely on its own. You are welcome even if you didn't attend the first session.
🧰 What to Bring
\- Your laptop with Python 3\.x installed
\- A code editor \(VS Code recommended\)
\- Enthusiasm and curiosity\!
_________________________________________________________________

Group Walk: Hallerbos!
This is a very special group walk! If you haven't visited the forest outside of the town Halle in the spring, then we highly recommend joining or going on your own time. During the spring, the Hallerbos is blooming with beautiful hyacinths covering the forest floor. You can get a sneak peak [here](https://www.hallerbos.be/).
Over the years this has turned into quite the tourist attraction, which is why we decided to plan the walk during the week.
Another special aspect of this group walk is that we will have a "guide" that not only grew up in this area, but is also in charge of expat services at the tourism department of Flemish Brabant. Nona will give some extra insight into the area and guide us through the first.
**Meeting point**: Leuven train station
\- We will take the train from Leuven to Halle\. Departure \(normally from platform B\) at 11:41 arrival 12:52\. We will meet outside of the Madmum on the station square at \(no later than\!\) 11:30 and walk to the platform together\.
\- From the train station in Halle we will take a bus to the forest\.
Please note that this walk is subject to the blooming of the flowers and the weather. If the flowers haven't bloomed yet, then we will cancel the walk. We did the best at estimating the time the flowers will bloom, since every year it is different.
You are responsible to get your own train and bus ticket, and we will handle the guiding part :)
Make sure to wear good walking shoes and bring water and maybe a snack!
We will walk maximum 8km, on walking paths through the forest.

Join & Play! 16 April
Our traditional "Join & Play" event is on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursdays of each month. As always, it's free to come & play with us.
How does it work ?
• The events are open for beginner to advanced gamers. If you're new here they're the perfect gateway to discover what we do!
• Those who want to host a game are asked to share in the comments below which game, & for how many players you can run your table.
• For others, if you see a game you'd like to join just respond to the host in the comments below and we'll reserve a spot for that game for you.
• Don't worry if you're new to boardgames or simply don't know the games being hosted this time around; you can simply show up and the event host will sort out a spot at a table for you! *But please make sure to arrive by 19h30* at the latest *so we can take the time to find you a suitable spot.*
• The rules for the games will be explained by the table host before the game starts. No need to study them upfront, although several hosts post a video link to rules or background which can enhance your enjoyment of the game if you have the time to watch beforehand. This is never mandatory, however.

+- 8 km Evening hike Kravaalbos
🌙 Evening Hike – Kravaalbos (Start: cafe stinne Meldert 18:45)
*This evening hike begins at 18:45 from the parking area right next to cafe Stinne, perfectly timed to enjoy the soft light as the forest transitions into dusk. The route covers a maximum of 8–10 km, making it an accessible and relaxed walk suitable for all levels*.
We meet at 18h45 for an 8 km evening hike through the Kravaalbos, a forest known for its peaceful atmosphere, soft trails, and rolling terrain. Around springtime, the woods often transform into a magical landscape filled with bluebells, covering the forest floor in shades of purple and creating that unmistakable fairytale vibe.
The route leads us along a mix of wide paths and narrower forest tracks. Some sections can be muddy, so hiking shoes 🥾 are strongly recommended to keep things comfortable and steady underfoot. The pace is relaxed, giving everyone time to enjoy the scenery, chat, and take in the evening light filtering through the trees.
After completing the loop, we head to Café Stinne to wrap up the evening with a drink together. Make sure to bring cash or cards, as payment options may vary.
A calm, social, and nature‑rich evening out—perfect to start the week on a good note.
To get there from Brussels maybe carpool possible via Asse train station.

Deep Conversation - Question Chosen in Session
Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister Café, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you!
After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations.
Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy:
What is a genuine friend?
Is social media turning us into emotional zombies?
Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them?
Are we driven by sex?
Is loneliness a personal failure?
Is morality relative?
**Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.

Climb & Chill 🧗♂️☕️
What's up Friends! 👋
Ready for some bouldering fun? Boulder-what? 🤔 It’s climbing (FR: escalade, le bloc) up to 4.5m high without ropes—and in my case, without much hope! 😂✨
It’s a super fun indoor activity, but be warned: it does require a certain level of physical fitness and/or skill. Most importantly, though, it requires awesome company—which we’ve got! 😎
The Idea:
📍 Meeting Point: For those arriving at 17:00, we’ll meet at the cafeteria (next to the billiards table).
Feel free to start earlier or later—just drop me a message or write in the group chat so we can meet up.
💪 Stay & climb as long as you want - venue closes at midnight!
🥤 Recharge: If you’ve had enough climbing for the day (we usually do this after 2 hours of climbing), we may head back to the cafeteria (or to the rooftop if it's sunny🌤️) for snacks, drinks & games. Cafeteria closes at 22:00.

Sunday funday: let's play dodgeball at Scioto Audubon park
Dodgeball is back again!
If you’ve been wanting to come out, this is an easy one to join. We’ll be playing for about 1.5 to 2 hours, you do not need to bring any equipment, and no experience is needed.
We use a specific set of rules and equipment to make the games run better and keep them fun for everybody, not just people who already know how to play.
If it rains, the event will be canceled.
Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.
Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.
