IOTA is a cryptocurrency (protocol) whose architecture is not blockchain based. But instead runs on a Direct Acyclic Graph (DAG, or "The Tangle"). Due to it's non-blockchain nature, IOTA has some very unique properties such as faster networks speeds as transactions increase, and partition tollerance.
