It's the Sunday July 2013 version of the sunset hike of Angel's rest!!

As this hike was so oversubscribed, I've opened up another one on Saturday evening. Please pick only one and let other people have a chance. Thanks.

NOTE: Last month this hike was very oversubscribed and yet some people who RSVP'd "yes" didn't show. You are an adult and should be treating this like you're setting a date with a friend -- don't say yes if you're not committed. Also, if you went on the sunset hike last month, please give other people a chance to sign up for the first day -- thx.

http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/8/9/2/f/event_10055119.jpeg This hike is considered "moderate" at 4.4 miles round trip and 1,500 feet elevation gain. However, as we're doing half of this in the dark, I'm raising the ranking to 'moderate plus' (somewhat below difficult). This should not be your first exercise of summer. And shouldn't be the first time you've ever walked by flashlight, either. You've got enough notice, you can go out in your back yard and practice... ;-))

Because the 'summit' juts out into the gorge, the views of the gorge are spectacular.

The goal is to see both the sunset in the west at 8:49 PM and the nearly full moon rise above the trees in the east at 7:49 PM. The moon will be rising above the rim of the gorge (rising at 96 degrees; just South of due East), but still likely behind trees at the 'official' moonrise time, so we should just get to be seeing the 98% full moon as the sun goes away. Plan to spend an hour or so at the top, so bring enough clothing to keep warm if you're just sitting....

What to bring:
Headlamp/flashlight and extra batteries. Headlamps work MUCH better than flashlights. I'll pick up some new inexpensive headlamps for $5 and have them available for you to buy. They're nothin' special, but they work fine and are kinda nice to have around the house or on car camps, etc. Bring 2 AA and 2 AAA batteries (depending on which headlamp you decide on).
trail shoes or boots. As we'll be coming down in the dark, your footing will be less sure, so go a little bit more sturdy.
Hiking/trekking poles are a pretty nice thing to have in the dark, too.
Water (about 1-2 quarts),
snackage/dinner and maybe some summit treats for you and your fellow hikers.
Your own personal First aid kit
Clothes for when it gets a little cooler as the sun sets... We had stunningly good weather for the last one I led; don't count on Oregon being sweet to us every time we do this... Maybe even a little fleece in case there's a breeze.

A bit of rain gear might be a good idea as an Oregon precaution. Remember, the temp. will drop roughly 10 degrees between the "heat" of the day and when we get back to the cars.

As always in Oregon, dress for those 'variable weather conditions'. It sucks being too cold, hot, wet... Go ahead, ask me how I know.... ;-))

Might want to bring extra socks, comfy shoes, and a fresh top for the ride home -whew!

There will be about 25 people on this hike, so let's be organized so we can keep things flowing.

As we'll be coming down in the dark, this is not a dog friendly hike. Sorry puppy lovers, gotta leave 'em home this trip.

I expect we'll be back to Gateway about 11:00 pm or so.

Oh, and just a couple more things; ya gotta sign the waiver -and- agree to the RSVP policy on your profile....
All members must read and accept the Liability Waiver-Assume Risk-Indemnify- Club Rules policy (click on "about us" to locate). Then on your personal page for this group (click on the "members" tab, then on your profile) if you haven't agreed to them, click on 'edit' and change the answers to yes. Hey, Joanne's a slave driver!! Ever seen her mad? Uff Da!!

See you on the 21st!!

Keith

Additional Info for all hikes, from Joanne - organizer:

A word about cotton clothing: Cotton clothing is discouraged because it does not insulate when it gets wet either from rain or sweat. If you want to hike in cotton clothing we allow this on our warmer summer day hikes only and PLEASE ALSO CARRY EXTRA NON-COTTON CLOTHES with you. This is so you can put on warmer more insulating clothes in the event of an emergency when you need to stay warm until help can arrive.

10 Essentials (always a good idea to bring)

Whistle lighter/waterproof matches & fire starter Map Compass (optionally supplemented with a GPS receiver) Knife Extra food and water (energy bar or gel) Extra clothes (hat, socks, gloves) Headlamp (outdoor)/ flashlight - (with extra bulb and batteries) First aid kit - it is a smart item to carry. Emergency shelter (solar blanket, garbage bag, tarp) Carpooling to Trail head: Carpools normally form at the Gateway parking garage where we will meet before the hike. If you prefer to carpool with others to Gateway, please feel free to use the comments section for this event to let people know and make arrangements.

CARPOOLING: Suggested mileage donation of 15 cents/mile/person or $8-$10 for this trip. Exact change makes it easier for the drivers. No one will be turned away for inability to contribute. Thanks!

Notice about the waiting list: The waiting list is manual for this hike which means that you won't be automatically placed on the trip when a spot opens up. In fact anyone can grab an open spot. To give those of you on the waiting list a better chance to grab a spot, as soon as I see the opening I will send an e-mail to all wait-listed folks. The first person that responds by grabbing the spot gets on the trip. If you are not successful on finding a spot on this trip, I want to thank you for your interest and encourage you to check back for future hikes. Remember that we are always looking for new event leaders so that more people can have opportunities to participate. Let us know if you want to volunteer to lead an event!

NO GUESTS PLEASE! only group members are allowed to RSVP, so if you want someone to join you have them join our meetup group and RSVP for this event under their own name.

Everyone must agree to the Group's Liability Agreement/Waiver. Your profile must show that you have read and agreed and you will sign a paper copy at the start of the event. If you need to fix your profile, there are step-by-step instructions on the Discussion board for this group - second message from the top. People who sign up without the necessary agreement in their profile will be removed from the trip.
