SpeakEASY! Interactive Media and Language Games

We'll start with an activity to help everyone get to know each other. Using a program called Google Earth, I am going to show everyone what Vancouver and my home town look like. Everyone is welcome to show us the city they come from; just tell us the name, and we will go on a virtual tour. We can explore anywhere in the world.

We will also be playing Text Twist, a fun and educational game that puts your English vocabulary and problem-solving skills to the test. This game gives you six jumbled letters, and you must make as many words from those letters as you can. To get to the next round, you must get at least 1 six-letter word before the time runs out. I will divide us up fairly into small teams, and everybody will compete in game-show style. At the end of each round, I will eliminate the team who got the lowest score. Everybody on the winning team gets a prize, or if everyone agrees, they may go head-to-head in a final round to win it all.

Toosheh Coffee House is a stylish coffee shop in downtown Vancouver. It has a decorated interior with artwork, musical instruments and other neat things to look at. Seating is comfortable, and there is a huge flat-screen television for our viewing pleasure. I will be bringing my laptop and HDMI cable, and since there is free WiFi, we can watch whatever we want. We are constantly planning new videos to watch and games to play. All feedback is welcome.

Toosheh Coffee House sells gourmet coffee and snacks. Their croissants and other pastries are made fresh every day by a renowned French bakery. There are 8 different kinds of croissants in addition to cake, mousse, tarts and other baked goods. There is also free filtered water set out for anybody who needs a quick drink, but please remember that it is considered customary to buy at least 1 item when you go to a cafe. If you go to an ESL school, REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR STUDENT CARD, as everyone with a student card gets 10% off.

The cost of this event is $5, which is paid upon entering the coffee shop and receiving your nametag. We cannot take more than 22 RSVP's because there is not enough room. If we already have 22 RSVP's, and you show up at the event without one, we might have to turn you down. Furthermore, if you have an RSVP but don't show up, we may give you a warning before taking further action. If you do not show up, you are wasting a seat that somebody else could have used, so please remember to change your status to "no" if and when you find out that you can no longer make it.
