1. What is the best way to think about ethics?

Differnet types of Ethical frameworks

  1. Consequentialism: Judges actions based on their outcomes, eg utilitarianism (maximizing overall happiness)
  2. Deontology: Focuses on duties and rules, regardless of consequences
  3. Virtue Ethics: Emphasizes character and moral virtues, such as honesty, courage, and compassion.

Different ways people arrive at their ethics.

  • Naturalism = because assumed or group values
  • Intuitionism = spontaneous behaviour
  • Emotivism = emotionally based (eg Jonathan Haidt's research)
  • Prescriptivism = because of religious or philosophical based systems
