Rohan Grey on CBDCs and ECash: reimagining the digital dollar

Details
We are very happy to have Rohan Grey [1] speak to us on CBDCs and digital dollars. He is assistant professor at Willamette University College of Law, where one focus is on money, technology and public banking. He was involved in the ABC Act [2] (which included minting trillion-dollar platinum coins), stablecoin legislation [3], and helped draft the ECash Act [4]. He is working on a book entitled "Digitizing the Dollar: The Battle for the Soul of Public Money in the Age of Cryptocurrency." Rohan will first give a presentation on anonymity, ledger vs hardware-based design, safety, and institutional political considerations, after which there will be a Q&A.
Here are a few topics and questions that may come up during the event:
- Rohan thinks anonymity and financial inclusion are critical for electronic money; do you agree? What is your preferred solution for tax evasion and money laundering?
- Which do you think will provide anonymity sooner: a government-issued digital dollar like ECash or a scalable public cryptocurrency? Why?
- Do you agree with Rohan's insistence that hardware is needed for offline anonymous cash? Do you think Ethereum plus a layer-2 solution could provide this?
- Isn't the dollar already digital? Rather than "Digitizing the Dollar", what do you think of "Anonymizing the Dollar" as a title and focus for Rohan's book?
The event will be online [5]. We hope you'll join us!
