EHSR February Meeting

Details

Our speaker for February will be Joanie Rubin, the Dexter Perkins Professor of History at the University of Rochester and the founding director of the U of R Humanities Center. Last fall, for the first time, she taught an undergraduate course on the culture wars in modern America. At our meeting, she will share with us some excerpts from one of the books she assigned to her students: Arlie Russell Hochschild’s 2016 work Strangers in Their Own Land. Hochschild, a sociologist, makes us think about the nature and usefulness of empathy as we grapple with how to relate to people whose values and beliefs, especially in the realm of politics, may be diametrically opposed to our own.
This will be a Zoom only meeting.
