EHSR September Meeting

Details

The topic for the September meeting is “Judging the Judges: Ethics in the Judiciary”. These past two years’ revelations regarding Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ financial resources, his wife’s involvement in January 6 activities, and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s flag displays have led to public discussions about the ethical obligations of the judiciary. These discussions have raised many questions, including (but certainly not limited to): What are judges’ ethical obligations? Who decides what judges’ ethical obligations should be? When and how should judges be barred from presiding over specific cases? How should judges be monitored for ethical violations? How should judges be punished for ethical violations? How should judicial ethics be monitored and enforced? Who should do the monitoring of judicial ethics? Who should enforce judicial ethics?
Our speaker will be Hon. Ellen Yacknin (ret.), a former Acting Monroe County Court Judge. Judge Yacknin was on the bench in Rochester, New York from January 2003 to December 2022. Before then, she worked as an attorney with not-for-profit civil legal services organizations in Harrisburg, PA, Buffalo, NY, and Rochester, NY. She also served as a law clerk to Federal District Court Judges in Buffalo, New York.
