The March of Folly REVISTED FOR 2025

Details

In light of a new administration being sworn in on Monday, Barbara Tuchman’s 1984 book The March of Folly begs to be revisited. It was inspired by the Vietnam War, a classic folly that bankrupted the U.S. cost 59,000 Americans, three million Vietnamese, domestic peace, and all trust in American leaders. To answer the question WHY?, Tuchman narrowly defines folly as counter-productive policies knowingly pursued by several administrations. Perfect examples are the (A) popes who caused the Reformation (B) British leaders who caused the American Revolution and (C) U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Let’s look at the types and causes of a few historic follies and then think about what could be in play today and what motivates them.
