The Importance of DEI to Ethical Culture

The terms "diversity," "equity" and "inclusion" - collectively, "DEI," are getting thrown around a lot these days by media spokespeople and politicians, many of whom do not seem to know, or care, what those concepts mean. In this talk, Ethical Society of Austin member Hans Maverick will talk about what DEI actually means in the context of an organization like ours. He will describe, briefly, the history of progressive anti-racist and civil rights movements and their deep connection to Ethical Culture, and he will explain why and how we ought to redouble our commitment to these principles in the face of virulent - and occasional violent - opposition.

Hans is a longtime Austin resident active in various progressive social causes, and a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He has been a member of the Ethical Society of Austin since 2016.
