The Ethical Culture Movement, was founded in 1876, with the establishment of the New York Society for Ethical Culture, as a non-theistic religion, in what is called “The Gilded Age,” during a period of profound changes in technology and scientific knowledge. While Felix Adler and his colleagues developed Ethical Culture as a response to these changes and the human problems that arose from them, American society again faces significant changes in technology with accompanying social, economic, and environmental problems that can be attributed to those changes. Can Ethical Culture continue and thrive in these circumstances? What can it offer to the individual who faces the dislocations predicted for the near future?

Carolyn A. Parker, Ph.D. is a member, Board member and Past President of Ethical Society of Austin, Trustee for New York Society for Ethical Culture, Past President of American Ethical Union, an Executive Committee Member of the National Ethical Service, and Senior Research Fellow at the Ethical Culture Institute.
