We often remember remarkable people by polishing away everything that made them human. Their doubts, contradictions, failures, and misguided choices gradually disappear, leaving behind heroic figures who seem wiser, braver, and more virtuous than any ordinary person could ever be. This may appear to honor their achievements, but it can also place meaningful lives beyond our reach.

In this talk, Leader Curt Collier will invite us to look behind the statues and familiar stories to consider the complicated human beings who became our heroes. What might their frailties, blind spots, and failures teach us about courage, integrity, and moral growth? Perhaps heroism does not require perfection. Perhaps it arises when imperfect people, people much like us, struggle with their limitations, learn from their failures, and nevertheless choose to act. We are all simply human, but that has never prevented a human being from doing something heroic.
