Sometimes we imagine truth as the result of a contest of ideas. In the “marketplace of ideas”, we tell ourselves, the best truths win. But truths are not singular things like products vying for our attention, and the epistemic landscape we inhabit is not like a supermarket or online shopping portal. Rather, truth is the result of collective effort, and flourishes only in the right environment: truth grows in a garden we tend together.

Dr. James Croft is the university chaplain and lead faith advisor for the University of Sussex, and the first Humanist in history to lead the chaplaincy of any UK university. A graduate of Cambridge and Harvard universities, James teaches and speaks widely on the topics of religion, spirituality, philosophy, and social change. Before he returned home to the UK he was the Leader of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, and he is delighted to return.

This Platform will feature music from The Ethical Band, the house band at the Ethical Society of St. Louis. It is composed of and led by members who are musicians of all kinds, ages, and skill levels.
