Inscendence: How Reality Creates Beauty

Many thinkers believe beauty is a bolt from the beyond: it comes from somewhere else, a portal to another world. In religion, beauty is seen as one of the surest signs of and routes to God, the divine piercing the everyday. When we pursue beauty, some think, we pop out of our reality to a higher one: transcendence. What if this picture is wrong? What if, instead of beauty being separate from reality, beauty is instead reality in resonant form? What if we don’t “transcend”, but “inscend”?
Dr. James Croft is university chaplain and lead faith advisor to the University of Sussex, and the first Humanist to lead a university chaplaincy in the United Kingdom. A graduate of Cambridge and Harvard, he was previously Leader of the Ethical Society of St. Louis. He lives in Brighton with his husband Kolten and their darling chihuahua Ella. Dr. Croft will be joining us virtually.
Mayla Stith is a singer-songwriter from St. Louis. She plays live sets around the area and mainly performs indie-folk/soft-rock covers and originals. She has an EP out under her name entitled Let Go, and it is available now on all streaming platforms. She is very excited to play for you!
