Poetry Is Not A Luxury: An Ethic Toward Survival
Details
The ESSL community welcomes guest artist and scholar Prof. Majiq (he/they) alongside Dr. Jé for a collaborative dialogue on the power of word-working and freedom-making. Prof. Majiq, a writing artist and performer who teaches at the University of Baltimore while completing their MFA, will reflect on the impact of Audre Lorde’s 1977 essay, “Poetry is Not a Luxury,” within their bodywork. Come witness these two partners unpack creative strategies, explore your own ethic of survival, and engage with the art of writing and preaching oneself alive.
This Platform will feature music from The Ethical Band, the house band at the Ethical Society of St. Louis. It is composed of and led by members who are musicians of all kinds, ages, and skill levels. Whether you are a trained player, beginner, or just want to shake a tambourine, The Ethical Band is a great way to both dip your toes into performing and become more involved in our Humanist community.
