If you are unfamiliar with the Trolley Problem, it is a hypothetical situation which asks if you would sacrifice one life in order to save five others. It's usually a thought exercise to determine if the good of the many outweighs the good of the one. However, I want to shift the focus a little onto the one, the individual life. What is the intrinsic value of a single human life, if there even is any?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. Are all human lives equal in value?
2. Is there a moral difference between killing someone and letting someone die?
3. Are you responsible for outcomes you could have prevented but didn’t?
4. Should governments be allowed to make trade-offs between lives?
5. Is it ever acceptable to sacrifice one person to save many?
6. Is human life valuable in itself, or because of something else (happiness, relationships, potential)?
7. Would you pull the lever or not?
