Details

Wittenberg, Cornell, Slide and Panther mountains! Starting and ending at the Woodland Valley Campground.

This hike is 19.5 miles and 6,050 ft of elevation gain if doing all 4 peaks. If Panther is skipped, it is 14.5 miles and about 5,000 ft of elevation gain.

We will do the Burroughs loop on a clockwise fashion, starting on the Woodland Valley parking lot. We cross the road and go over the bridge and start climbing on the red trail. After 3.9 miles we reach the top of Wittenberg Mtn. Another 0.8 miles will bring us to the top of Cornell, right past the infamous Cornell Crack. Then, it's 1.45 miles to Slide. The descent on red is 2.1 miles to the intersection with yellow. Taking this trail to the right for 0.7 miles will bring us to the parking lot on Rt 47.

We walk on the road for 1.2 miles. After passing a lake on the right, we will see a woods road on that side, just past a driveway for the house by the lake. The woods road has a metal rope preventing drivers from going through, but hikers are allowed here. After 1.4 miles on the woods road, we will reach the yellow and blue trails. The yellow trail to the right is the continuation of the Burroughs Range that will allow us to finish the loop. But before that we will climb to Panther, on the blue trail straight ahead. It is 2.5 miles to the top, after passing Giant Ledge and its great views. Once on top of Panther we have the option of continuing straight down the mountain for another 2.5 miles for some extra conditioning, and then retracing back up to Panther and down the way we came (this additional option will add 5 miles to the hike and 1,000 ft of elevation gain).

Down at the bottom of the blue trail we intersect yellow once more. Here we make a left and stay on yellow for 2.8 miles back to our cars.

Water source:
On the blue trail, 0.7 miles from its start, to the left, there's a spring, just before reaching Giant Ledge.
