This month we’re watching To Have and Have Not (1944), a romantic war adventure directed by Howard Hawks, loosely based on Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel of the same name. It stars Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan and Lauren Bacall. The plot centers on the romance between a freelancing fisherman in Martinique and a beautiful American drifter, complicated by the growing French resistance in Vichy France. It was one of the top 10 grossing films of 1944 and received a best actor award from the National Board of Review for Bogart.

With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.
