CRUNCHY TOPIC: Expanding Universe

A new study shows that the universe's expansion may not be accelerating. For the past several years, scientists have seen that, using the light from Cepheid variables (what are called: standard candles), the universe appears to be expanding. They have then added a bunch of fiddly bits to physics to explain why the expansion is accelerating.

A new study shows that the "Standard Candle" may not be so standard. It shows that their luminosity varies but varies predictably. So, they are still useful. We just have to learn how to adjust the measurements they give us.

As with all science, the variability hasn't been "proven" and we can't yet know that their luminosity is variable (and of it varies as this study claims) but, if true, it allows us to take a weed whacker to all the bits they had to stick onto the expanding universe to explain the acceleration. It also gives me the chance, in the future, to be able to say: "I told you so."
