The Drama of Genesis 1

Genesis chapter 1 has generated more books than it has verses. Before interpreting a text, we must determine the type of literature we are interpreting. Is it allegory, history in the modern sense, science, poetry, something else or a mix? I will present Genesis 1 as semi-poetic drama. It was created to be presented as a live dramatic presentation from memory. Reading it silently with little or no emotion misses the drama.

In this presentation, I will give a dramatic rendering of Genesis 1 and discuss the theological meaning of the text. Next month, I will address the issue of how to deal with Genesis 1 from a scientific perspective.
