Mind the Gap: Musings on Privilege and Entitlement

Details

Whether it’s fast-tracked promotions, beachfront inheritances, or the mysterious confidence of people who cut queues with no shame - privilege and entitlement show up everywhere, shaping how we live, work, and relate to one another. But what lies beneath these invisible advantages? Are they earned, deserved, imposed, or simply inherited quirks of the social lottery? In a world where some are born into gated communities and others into systems built to keep them out, we’ll take a closer look at how ideas of ownership, access, and moral worth have been justified - or challenged - across time.

This event invites a lively, open-ended exploration of how societies have defined who gets what, why, and at what cost. Together, we’ll reflect on the assumptions behind fairness and freedom, the tangled relationship between punishment and privilege, and how moral expectations often shift depending on who’s in the spotlight. This isn’t about taking sides, but rather uncovering the deeper ideas that continue to shape how we understand success, entitlement, justice, and who owes what to whom.

What makes someone truly entitled to what they possess, and can ownership ever be neutral? How do ideas of fairness shift when we consider structural inequality, historical advantage, or hidden labour? In what ways do systems of discipline and reward reinforce power, and how do social norms create moral hierarchies that favour some while silencing others? Can freedom exist in a system built on unequal starting points, and how do claims to merit or desert hold up under scrutiny? What role do gendered expectations play in our judgments of who deserves recognition, respect, or care? And at the end of the day, is it possible to imagine a society where entitlement is earned - not assumed - and where privilege is acknowledged, not invisibly reinforced?

---

Alright folks! I want to give a little disclaimer - I’m not claiming to be an expert on the topics we’ll be discussing. My aim is to create a judgment-free zone where attendees can share thoughts and experiences openly.

Let’s approach our conversations with open minds and a sense of curiosity, knowing that we each bring unique backgrounds and perspectives. Please feel encouraged to express yourself in ways that reflect who you are, and let’s all keep in mind that our words carry meaning for those around us. The intention of the meetup is to learn from one another, so if anyone feels uncomfortable or misunderstood at any point, please don’t hesitate to speak up. This way, we can address things together and make sure everyone feels valued and included.

The goal is to explore ideas collaboratively, without promoting any particular viewpoint. We may not find simple answers to the questions we face, but by approaching them with empathy, respect, and inclusivity, we can gain new insights and work towards positive change.
