Spring Walk: The Ooij polder and Bisonbaai (14km)

Details

This circular walk takes us into the Ooij polder, a former swamp area to the east of Nijmegen city centre, which is now a nature reserve. Since drying out, it has now become home to a variety of vegetation and wildlife thanks to various rewilding projects. There are wild horses, cows, beavers and an increasing number of bird species.

From the meeting point we will be in the Ooij polder in about 5 minutes. We will start by walking along the river for a while where there are some small sandy beaches. Then we will head inland through part of the nature reserve. Finally we will do a circuit around the beautiful Bisonbaai before heading back towards the city.

The walk is a mixture of paved and unpaved paths and mostly level. Good footwear is required. There are several (mostly takeaway-only) options, so it's recommended to bring plenty of water and maybe some snacks of your own.

If you want a shorter walk, there is an option to bail out near the village of Ooij where you can get a bus back to Nijmegen.

These walks tend to get full, so if you have RSPVed "Yes" and your plans change, please be considerate and change it to "No" so that someone else can get the place. See you there!
