Mariano Otero, peintre espagnol né à Madrid en août 1942 et mort à Rennes le 9 juillet 2019, a beaucoup écouté du tango lorsqu’il était gamin, et n’a jamais oublié ses airs et ses danses, ses paroles et ses couleurs.
Solitude, déracinement, mais aussi justice sociale et révolte, tous ces thèmes lui sont chers depuis l’exil de son père en 1947, écrivain et journaliste républicain contraint de fuir le franquisme. Ce n’est qu’en 1956 que la famille Otero le rejoint à Rennes, Mariano a alors 14 ans.
Encre sur papier, traits au crayon, pastels sur papier : pendant une dizaine d’années, Mariano Otero va peindre, dans divers formats, le couple dansant, la tanguera qui remet sa chaussure, l’enlacement des corps, le son du bandonéon,…
« Mon attirance pour le tango vient de loin. Ma mère, qui le dansait très bien dans sa jeunesse, me chantait enfant les paroles de Carlos Gardel… Le tango était en moi et le déclic s’est produit en novembre 1994… Depuis, je tourne autour du tango. »

À l’occasion du 90ème anniversaire de la mort de Carlos Gardel (1890 – 1935), sur l’initiative de Georges Galopa, président des Gardéliens de Toulouse et spécialiste de la biographie de Gardel, et en partenariat avec La Poste, l’Union philatélique toulousaine a décidé de réaliser un timbre et un collector (de 4 timbres différents) en hommage au créateur du tango chanté. Une carte postale oblitérée d’un timbre à date illustré Carlos Gardel vient compléter cet hommage.
Ces timbres uniques seront exposés à la Communauté municipale de Santé, aux mêmes horaires que l’exposition « Les tangos de Mariano Otero ». Ils seront en vente sur place, puis en suivant à l’Eterna milonga chaque jour, ainsi que lors de la Despedida le dimanche 6 juillet au Mas Tolosa.
Au-delà de la présentation de ce projet, vous pourrez profiter à la Communauté municipale de Santé d’une exposition de timbres, de cartes postales et de documents musicaux sur Carlos Gardel à travers le monde, l’Amérique latine, le tango, les instruments de musique, répartie sur trois panneaux.
Le lancement officiel de ce projet aura lieu le dimanche 29 juin à 16h à la Communauté Municipale de Santé, en présence de Mr Georges Galopa, président de l’association des Gardéliens de Toulouse.

Mariano Otero, a Spanish painter born in Madrid in August 1942 and died in Rennes on July 9, 2019, listened to tango a lot as a child and never forgot its tunes and dances, its lyrics and its colors.
Solitude, uprootedness, but also social justice and rebellion—all these themes have been dear to him since the exile of his father in 1947, a Republican writer and journalist forced to flee Franco's regime. It wasn't until 1956 that the Otero family joined him in Rennes, when Mariano was 14 years old.
Ink on paper, pencil strokes, pastels on paper: for about ten years, Mariano Otero painted, in various formats, the dancing couple, the tanguera putting her shoe back on, the entwining of bodies, the sound of the bandoneon, and more.
"My attraction to tango goes back a long way. My mother, who danced it very well in her youth, sang the words of Carlos Gardel to me as a child... Tango was in me, and the turning point came in November 1994... Since then, I've been revolving around tango."
On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the death of Carlos Gardel (1890–1935), at the initiative of Georges Galopa, president of the Gardéliens de Toulouse and a specialist in Gardel's biography, and in partnership with La Poste, the Toulouse Philatelic Union has decided to create a stamp and a collector's edition (of four different stamps) in tribute to the creator of sung tango. A postcard with a postmark depicting Carlos Gardel completes this tribute.
These unique stamps will be on display at the Communauté Municipale de Santé, during the same hours as the "Tangos of Mariano Otero" exhibition. They will be on sale on site, then daily at the Eterna Milonga, as well as during the Despedida on Sunday, July 6th at Mas Tolosa.
In addition to the presentation of this project, the Communauté Municipale de Santé will also feature an exhibition of stamps, postcards, and musical documents on Carlos Gardel from around the world, including Latin America, tango, and musical instruments, spread across three panels.
The official launch of this project will take place on Sunday, June 29th at 4:00 pm at the Communauté Municipale de Santé, in the presence of Mr. Georges Galopa, President of the Toulouse Gardéliens Association.
