On Sunday November 9th, join me for the Re-opening of the Gardiner Museum after a “once-in-a-generation”, $15 million renovation that has fully transformed its 9,000-square-foot ground floor. We will also be part of the opening of the new, immersive, and largest exhibition from Linda Rotua Sormin: Uncertain Ground**, and the First-ever Gallery of Indigenous Ceramics. The whole Museum will come to life with hands-on clay activities, tours, live music, food, dance, and more. Experience their new Collection Galleries, Makerspace, Community Learning Centre, and hear directly from artists and curators.

For the first time in its history, the museum is opening a permanent dedicated gallery for Indigenous ceramics, curated by Herbert-Spense and called Indigenous Immemorial: Ceramics of the Great Lakes Region. Indigenous Immemorial will be part of The William B.G. Humphries Collection Galleries on the ground floor, which will also include works from Indigenous Latin America made before 1550 and European pottery, along with modern and contemporary showcases.

The ground floor will also feel “lighter, brighter and more welcoming” because of an open concept remodel that allows guests to see all the way through to the back of the museum....

Program
11:30am: Event Start time (Ground Floor to the right of the entrance)

11:45am - 12:45pm: Hands-On Clay Activity (Makerspace, Ground Floor)
Get creative with clay in this drop-in activity designed for all ages. Sessions run in 20-minute intervals. Bring your own box if you would like to take your creation home with you. This is booked first as I was informed it would be busy.

12:45 – 1:45pm: Collection Galleries Tour (Ground Floor)
Discover the new Collection Galleries with Chief Curator & Deputy Director Sequoia Miller.

1:45 – 2:30pm: Community Time with Artist Linda Rotua Sormin (Exhibition Hall, 3rd Floor)
Drop by and meet with exhibiting artist Linda Rotua Sormin for insights about her exhibition. Bring your questions and hear her stories, ideas, and reflections on her practice in an informal community gathering.

2:30 - 3pm: Break/ Explore/ Visit Store

3 – 4pm: Indigenous Methodologies Tour (Collection Galleries, Ground Floor)
Join Curator of Indigenous Ceramics Franchesca Hebert-Spence as she reviews the Collection Galleries through a decolonial curatorial lens. This discussion will contextualize and highlight the ways in which each gallery challenges colonial museological practices through curatorial approaches, artwork selection, and didact materials.

4pm: Meet the Curators - Optional (Collection Galleries, Ground Floor)
Drop in for conversations with our curators, offering insight into the newly installed galleries, the ground floor transformation, and shaping the Museum for the future.
