Architects get a mixed reception amongst modern software projects. Many commentators think the role is redundant, and any artefacts produced to be contrary to agile practice. Yet still, many developers seek to become an architect.
Why would they do this? And how do they become a good one?

Mark will share his experience from a non-technical, as well as a technical perspective, about the role that successful architects can take in software projects. Managers, stakeholders, and developers alike will hear how architects can make a positive contribution to many aspects of software delivery.

As a role which has a great deal of breadth, Mark will expand on what people in technical roles will have to learn, and what they will have to consider leaving behind, to succeed in architecture. For many people starting out, Architect is a title to aim for, and this talk will show how that is both a good and a bad thing.

However, this is not just a talk for technical people looking at architecture as a career goal. Business people, and roles such as product owners, are often wary of architects. In explaining more about the practical aspects, Mark will show how most people who use, buy, or commission IT products should feel confident to talk about architecture.

About the Speaker
Mark has worked across all areas of software development, most recently as an architect for Freshfields Bruckhaus and Derringer, working with EE on multiple strategic and tactical projects. Previously he has held senior architect roles at ADP, Sonovate, and Northern Gas Networks (Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings). With over twenty years in software development, Mark has experienced projects which have benefitted from good architecture practice, and those that have faltered. Here he is going to talk about how and where to make it fit, and how architects can make a positive impact on agile software delivery.
