Brooklyn Waterfront Walk
Details
Explore Dumbo to the Naval Cemetery Landscape and Domino Park
We’ll meet at High Street Station at 1 PM (see Meetup map "how to find us"). If taking the train from Manhattan, this would be the stairs by the rear of the train.
We start our walk down toward DUMBO, one of Brooklyn’s most photogenic neighborhoods. Once a jumble of warehouses and factories (the name stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), it’s now full of cobblestone streets, art galleries, cafés, and riverfront views that make for great photos.
From there, we’ll head east past the Brooklyn Navy Yard — a huge shipbuilding site that operated for more than 160 years, from 1801 until it closed in 1966. These days, it’s come back to life as a hub for small manufacturers, artists, and tech startups, with lots of creative energy replacing the clang of the old shipyards. We’ll stop by the Naval Cemetery Landscape, a peaceful green space built on part of the old Yard, before continuing along the waterfront.
Our route (~7 miles) highlights how Brooklyn’s waterfront has changed — once all about shipping, warehouses, and factories, now it’s parks, bike paths, and places to just hang out and enjoy the view. We can cut the route short if that's the consensus.
We’ll make our way up to Fort Greene Park, the back to Domino Park, where the old Domino Sugar factory has been transformed into a riverside park with art and history mixed in. Finally, we’ll stroll north to McCarren Park and wrap up the afternoon with some hearty Polish food nearby — perfect after a few miles of exploring.
