The Hispanic Society Museum & Library offers free guided tours on Saturdays (and Fridays). Learn about the museum’s history and explore works on view, special collections, and the landmarked Audubon terrace. Tours are led by museum educators and last approximately 45-60 minutes.
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library is a distinguished free museum and research library dedicated to the art, history, and culture of the Spanish-speaking world — including Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and the Philippines. It was founded in 1904 by philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington with the mission of creating a public institution where scholars and the public could explore Hispanic heritage through extraordinary artworks and rare historical materials. The Society’s rich holdings include thousands of paintings, drawings, sculptures, decorative arts, photographs, and one of the world’s most significant collections of books and manuscripts related to Hispanic culture.
Housed in Beaux-Arts buildings on the historic Audubon Terrace campus, the collection spans from ancient Iberia through the early 20th century and features masterpieces by artists like El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, and Sorolla, as well as extensive decorative arts and archival treasures. The library’s holdings include hundreds of thousands of printed volumes and documents, making it an extraordinary resource for research and discovery. The museum’s galleries are free to visit (though reservations may be recommended), and they offer a quieter, richly educational experience that highlights Hispanic artistic achievement across centuries.
