Brooklyn Walk: Monk Parakeets, Di Fara Pizza, and Green-Wood
Details
🌿 Brooklyn Walk: Parakeets, Pizza, and Peaceful Paths We’ll kick things off at the Flatbush Avenue–Brooklyn College station on the 2 and 5 trains—a convenient southern Brooklyn hub and an easy place for everyone to gather.
From there, we’ll stroll over to Brooklyn College, a surprisingly tranquil campus with leafy paths, Georgian-style buildings, and a calm, almost cloistered feel that contrasts with the surrounding city. Keep your eyes (and ears) open here—this is one of the best places in New York City to spot the famous Monk Parakeet colonies. You’ll often hear them before you see them, chattering loudly from treetops and nesting structures.
After soaking in the campus atmosphere, we’ll continue walking toward Midwood, heading for a well-earned food stop at Di Fara Pizza on Avenue J near East 15th Street. This legendary spot is widely considered one of NYC’s best pizza destinations, known for its meticulous preparation and classic New York slices. We’ll take a relaxed break here to eat, recharge, and chat.
Once everyone’s fueled up, we’ll continue the walk toward Green-Wood Cemetery, one of Brooklyn’s most beautiful and historic landscapes. Along the way, the neighborhood scenery gradually opens up into something quieter and more reflective.
Inside Green-Wood, we’ll wander among rolling hills, ponds, and striking Gothic architecture. The cemetery is the resting place of many notable figures, and it doubles as an arboretum and wildlife haven. Keep watching for more Monk Parakeet sightings—there’s another well-known colony here, often nesting near the entrance arch.
We’ll wrap up the walk at Poetica Coffee, a cozy spot perfect for tea, coffee, and a relaxed wind-down after the walk.
For the trip home, the nearby 15th Street–Prospect Park station (F and G trains) offers an easy and convenient return option.
