The Route (Leg by Leg)

Start — Borough Hall

Gather at Borough Hall, Court and Remsen streets. This iconic civic building anchors downtown Brooklyn, with subway connections (2, 3, 4, 5, R trains).

### 1. Atlantic Avenue

Walk east from Borough Hall toward Atlantic Avenue—one of Brooklyn's oldest and busiest arteries. You'll pass storefronts, bodegas, and the Fulton Mall entrance. This stretch feels like real Brooklyn: loud, lively, and layered with generations of immigrants.

### 2. Brooklyn Bridge Park

Cut south to the riverfront and enter Brooklyn Bridge Park. This reclaimed industrial waterfront spans 85 acres across 7 piers. The views of Manhattan skyline are prime photo territory—especially Pier 1 with its sweeping vista of the lower Manhattan towers.

### 3. Brooklyn Navy Yard

Head northeast into the Brooklyn Navy Yard (300+ acres, operational since 1801). Once America's premier naval shipbuilding facility, it's now a mixed-use industrial campus. The Building 92 visitor center (Flushing Ave & Carlton Ave) offers exhibits on its history if anyone wants a quick indoor detour.

### 4. Naval Cemetery Landscape

This is the route's quiet emotional peak. Located within the Navy Yard, it was an unmarked burial ground for the Brooklyn Naval Hospital—over 2,000 veterans and patients interred here. The space opened as the first new public park on the 26-mile Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.
What you'll find:

  • A black‑locust boardwalk winding through native meadows (50+ plant species)
  • Black‑cherry Sacred Grove and Memorial Meadow
  • Granite markers tracing the historic burial axis
  • A community bench with a guest notebook for visitors to leave messages

Keep voices low here—many families still visit to pay respects.

### 5. Williamsburg

Emerge north into Williamsburg, Brooklyn's creative hub. Cobblestone streets, converted warehouses, and the G train stations frame this neighborhood. This is where the group can stretch legs and grab coffee if needed.

### 6. East River Greenway (Manhattan Side)

From Williamsburg, cross the Manhattan Bridge or take the ferry to reach the East River Greenway on Manhattan's side. This riverside path runs along the East River waterfront, giving continuous skyline views as you head south toward Chinatown.

### 7. North Dumpling — 21 Division Street ⚠️

Important geographic note: 21 Division Street is in Manhattan's Chinatown, not Brooklyn. It sits between Catherine and Market Streets, just off Canal Street.
Details:

  • Name: North Dumpling (北方鍋貼)
  • Address: 21 Division St, New York, NY 10002
  • Hours: Daily ~9:00 am – 10:00 pm (Mon closes ~9:30 pm)
  • Signature dish: Pan-fried chive-and-pork dumplings (~$4 for 10)
  • Also serves: Soup dumplings (xiao long bao), other dumpling varieties, scallion pancakes, noodle soups

This is a budget-friendly spot with fast turnover—perfect for a casual meetup meal. Expect a wait during peak lunch hours (12–2 pm).

### 8. Madison Street → Brooklyn Bridge

After eating, walk up Madison Street (southward toward the river). This connects to the approach ramp of the Brooklyn Bridge. The walkway is shared with cyclists, so stay right and watch for faster traffic.

### 9. Cadman Plaza Park

On the Brooklyn side of the bridge, pause at Cadman Plaza Park. This small green space sits beneath the bridge's massive stone towers—the classic postcard view. The World War II Veterans Memorial and the park's benches make a good regroup spot.

### 10. End — Borough Hall

Walk west back toward Borough Hall to close the loop. The circle is complete, and you've touched Brooklyn's waterfront spine, industrial history, and Chinatown's food culture in one day.
