This is almost two tours in one! Visit some of New York's most fascinating neighborhoods as we take in some unique and very important sites and buildings. Stops include: Ottendorfer Library and Polyclinic Hospital (honoring German immigrant Anna Ottendorfer who started the first free lending library and a health clinic serving poorer immigrants); Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Building; (honoring the successful struggle for better working conditions in factories); New York Studio School (honoring visionary champions of American art Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Julianna Force); the apartments of Eleanor Roosevelt, Emma Lazarus, Bella Abzug, Dorothy Day and Emma Goldman; Margaret Sanger's pioneering Manhattan Clinic; and the United Charities Building (which housed influential women's groups and shaped the U.S. Government's role in addressing human needs). We’ll also stop by the homes of famous writers, among them Jane Jacobs, whose seminal work “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” shaped a new vision for urban planning and development.
