Featuring 42 textile works and oil paintings, Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets is the first comprehensive survey of Santos Reinbolt’s art ever presented and marks the first-ever solo museum exhibition for the artist organized outside her native Brazil. Best known for her large-scale embroideries made from hundreds of vibrant colored threads, which the artist referred to as quadros de lã (“wool paintings”), the exhibition represents more than half of all known works by the artist and examines the artist’s work through a variety of lenses, including gender, race, and socio-economic dynamics.
About the Museum
"Since 1961, the American Folk Art Museum has been the leading institution shaping the understanding of art by the self-taught through its exhibitions, publications, and educational programs. As a center of scholarship, it showcases the creativity of individuals whose singular talents have been refined through personal experience rather than formal artistic training. Its collection includes more than eight thousand works of art from four centuries and nearly every continent—from compelling portraits and dazzling quilts to powerful works by living artists in a variety of mediums."
Schedule and Itinerary:
12 noon - 1:00pm: Visit the museum at your own pace. Allow at least 45 minutes, less if you anticipate not being that interested in the exhibit. Be sure to use the restroom. Admission is free but security staff will want to inspect your bag upon entry. We'll meet outside the museum entrance at 1pm for the start of our walk.
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm: Guided walking tour of the Lincoln Square neighborhood that includes the history of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the San Juan Hill neighborhood that was razed in order to create it. We'll also visit the West 67th Street Artist Colony Historic District and a bit of Central Park West and several iconic buildings including the West Side YMCA and the "ghostbusters building."
