OVERVIEW
The focus of this tour is on Greenwich Village, historically a place of innovation and the birthplace of counterculture and progressive education, saw the flourishing of women’s drive for greater autonomy in America, including the struggle for the right to vote, access to birth control and creative expression. Join us for a fun and educational tour of sites in the West and Central Village honoring the women who made their mark on history.
The many stops include New York Studio School (honoring visionary champions of American art Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Julianna Force); authors and dramatists Lorraine Hansberry, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Eva La Gallienne, and Willa Cather; the former homes of Eleanor Roosevelt, Emma Lazarus, Bella Abzug; and activists Jane Jacobs and Harriot Stanton Blatch. We’ll see where Barbra Streisand launched her singing career and where Billie Holiday first performed “Strange Fruit” as we mix in the fascinating history of the village.
Cheers,
Your organizer and guide,
Hank
