TOUR OVERVIEW
Long Island City, Queens, with its seemingly countless number of new residential buildings, has become of the fastest growing communities not only in NYC but in the entire United States. Once an independent city, we'll visit the downtown hub with its historic courthouse along with the quaint historic area and the nearby arts district.
A highlight is Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park whose Phase II (opened in 2018) won a Masterworks Award from the Municipal Arts Society for the "Best Urban Landscape" for a new or revitalized open space that contributes to livability and resilience.
The tour will cover the history, lifestyle and area along with the broad array of neighborhood amenities - restaurants, breweries, museums, and outdoor recreation. You'll enjoy the views of midtown Manhattan and with any luck a picturesque sunset.
Itinerary:
Guided Walking Tour: 5:30pm - 7:30pm:
(optional): 7:30pm - 8:00pm, or whenever the music ends, hang out and enjoy the music and stay in the neighborhood for dinner (lots of options). There are also food trucks by the outdoor music venue.
There will be restrooms available near the end of the tour.
Getting home: You can take the ferry to Manhattan or Brooklyn. It's about a 5 block walk to the #7 train and a bit further for the E, M and G.
ABOUT THE MUSIC:
Jazz, rooted in African and diasporic traditions, is defined by its spirit of improvisation—and few embody this more than Malika Zarra. A Moroccan-born, French-raised, and globally celebrated singer, composer, and producer, Zarra fuses North African chaâbi, Amazigh (Berber), and Gnawa rhythms with contemporary urban jazz. Singing in Amazigh, Arabic, French, and English, her velvety mezzo-soprano and multicultural sound have captivated audiences worldwide, making her a powerful voice in the global jazz scene.
Featuring Malika Zarra on vocals & hand percussion, JC Maillard on guitar & effects, and Mamadou Ba on bass.
