Heart of Harlem Walking Tour Celebrating Black History Month

This tour is free with a voluntary constribution to your guide at the end via cash, venmo or zelle. Bring snacks, something to nosh during the walk given the nearly 3 hour length.

If you need to use a restroom, arrive early. Our meeting place is in front of the Schomburg Branch of the NY Public library (free admission, restrooms). In celebration of the the library's 100 anniversary, 100 celebrates the story of the Schomburg Center’s storied collections, which today number in the millions, and continue to inspire learners, seekers, and creators. 100 celebrates a century of committed collecting and dedicated stewardship by generations of Schomburg Center librarians, curators, and educators who have nurtured the creation of new knowledge. 100 celebrates the historic legacy of this singular institution as we stand on the cusp of our new century.

DESCRIPTION
This guided walk will cover the rich history of Harlem along with tits magnificent architecture, restaurant scene, culture and nightlife.

The guided walking tour (approximately 3.5 miles of walking, level terrain), will last from 11:00am to approximately 2:00pm and will include visits to several historic districts and stops associated with iconic Harlem figures including Cicely Tyson, Billie Holiday, Malcolm X, Madame C.J. Walker, Marcus Garvey, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin, and Langston Hughes. We'll learn about Harlem's rich contributions to civil rights, visual arts, music and jazz (with a break at Harlem's Jazz Museum - restroom available).

The tour will end convenient to transportation at 125th Street and places to eat.
