Tour Overview
Once the 25-acre farm of affluent Quaker Robert Murray in the 1700s, today’s Murray Hill is a vibrant residential community that includes a magnificent 19th century historic district, several museums and cultural centers for the public including the Morgan Library and Museum, Scandinavia House and the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Area Covered: 42nd Street to 35th Street, between 5th Avenue and 1st Avenue.

While Park Avenue, 2nd and 3rd Avenue are lined with high-rise apartments, much of the neighborhood’s architecture is comprised of elegant mid-19th century townhouses, gilded age mansions and distinctive houses of worship. As we discover the many layers of Murray Hill’s history, you will also learn about a legendary event that occurred during the early days of the American Revolution in 1776!

We will also stroll over to Tudor City, which features among the world's first skyscraper apartment buildings. Built in the 1920's in the medieval Tudor style, it was also created as a self-contained walkable community, complete with a beautiful park.

About the Current Exhibit at the Romanian Cultural Institute
(Courtesy of RCI-USA)
"HERS is a group exhibition that foregrounds the multiplicity of female voices in contemporary art, bringing together ten women artists whose practices span painting, sculpture, installation, and photography.
Rather than advancing a singular narrative, HERS embraces plurality. Each artist engages with distinct modes of storytelling—intimate, symbolic, psychological, or social. The works on view address lived realities, inner worlds, memory, intimacy, resilience, and imagination, inviting the audience into a complex panorama of contemporary concerns shaped by multiple identities and individual histories.

Rooted in personal narratives yet resonating within broader social and cultural contexts, HERS offers a deep exploration of the female universe in its most expansive sense—one that resists fixed definitions and instead foregrounds nuance, contradiction, and transformation."
