It's almost Hallowe'en, where the ghosts of our technical debt and design choices come out to haunt us! We'll be having two talks around this topic and the ways to conquer our fears!

  • Scary Refactorings by Franziska Sauerwein

  • Spooky Migrations by Alex Wilson

We ain't 'fraid of no ghosts!

-----

Do you ever have nightmares where you are trying to get to your destination, and you keep moving, trying different things, but for various reasons, you never arrive?

Some refactorings are like that - you extract methods, name constants, increase readability, spend a lot of time cleaning up - but you never get to a good place with the code.Let's talk about how to refactor for the right reasons and with the right methods to use our time efficiently and make working with that code easier in the future.

Franziska has worked as a software developer and consultant for three years before moving to London to join Codurance as an apprentice. Her passions include Test Driven Development, Refactoring, XP techniques and high quality software development. She is always trying to improve her skills and share knowledge.

As an active member of the European Software Craftsmanship community she loves to participate in unconferences and organises code retreats, hackathons, coding dojos as well as tech talks. She aims to use her skills and creativity to develop software that is reliable, easy to adapt and doing what it is supposed to do.

Every team has had to do one of these in the past - the big scary migration, full of unknowns, with minimal downtime.

Unruly has been through one of these recently, and Alex W will share some of their experiences on migrating a literally non-rebuildable monolith into a more modern setup.

-----

In addition to our usual curry nibbles, we will provide some spooooky Hallowe'en-themed snacks for your delectation.
