Orienteering in Stanley Park

Orienteering in Stanley Park

Details

Orienteering is the art of running around a park playing tag against the clock and inanimate objects. Imagine "The Amazing Race" but with a map and a compass and dodging people. Wednesday's event is open to beginners and takes place in Stanley Park in Vancouver. Registration is required in advance and a waiver needs to be signed and brought in. Full requirements and more information can be found on the event page and below:

Safety Precautions

Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Watch for vehicles and bikes when crossing roads. Be respectful of other pedestrians, cyclists, dog-walkers, roller-bladers, and small children. As the event center will be in a pretty popular part of the park, make sure you look for pedestrians and cars as you round corners! This is especially important considering the other events occurring at the same time as our event.

Parking/Start/Finish Locations
The event center will be located in the field just north of the Vancouver Aquarium. Look for GVOC flags and tents. The finish will be near Lumberman Arch and the start just a few minutes walk to the south.
While this year's start is a bit farther from the larger parking areas, there a few smaller parking areas next to the event center. For a full view of the parking situation look here. Because of other events in Stanley Park you will likely encounter a lot of folks in the park. It might be a good idea to come early to secure a parking spot close to the event center. You might also consider parking outside of the park and walking or taking public transport into the event center.

Post-Event dining
Lots of great options nearby. Lets discuss as we relax after our courses! Refreshments will not be provided due to Stanley Park policies. Please bring your own filled water bottles and food to make sure you are well hydrated and fueled, pre- and post-adventure. Make sure any trash are recyclables are placed in the appropriate bin.

What should I bring? Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! If it's wet outside, you might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! A compass is optional (we have extra ones for borrowing). For added safety, a whistle is mandatory for all GVOC events. Read more in the WJR Introduction to Orienteering.
