Rapid scientific and technological advances have led to an increased understanding on how genetic differences influence the way individuals respond to medical treatments. Combining established clinical knowledge with emerging scientific information on genetics and biochemistry allows us to move from blockbuster therapies to more personalized treatments. These developments promise preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic solutions that match with personal characteristics and lead to improved outcomes for patients and significant efficiency savings.
Personalized medicine is praised by many people, however, we must not underestimate the ethical, political and financial challenges that come with these advances. Successful implementation of personalized medicine requires, among others, stimulating intellectual property systems, establishing regulatory frameworks to support innovation and setting guidelines for the use of genetic data, genetic testing and personalized treatments.
In consideration of the aforementioned premises, Biotecture & Health 2.0 Amsterdam decided to combine forces to stimulate the collaboration of healthcare stakeholders and improve the understanding of the potential of personalized medicine. By hosting the “Personalized Medicine - Let’s make it work!” event, we want to give various stakeholders a platform where they can exchange knowledge, share opinions and support each other in order to advance the personalized medicine field in the Netherlands.
Specifically, the first objective of the event is to identify the opportunities and implications that personalized medicine can bring with regard the following four areas:
-
Scientific & Technological developments
-
Safety & Efficacy
-
Understanding & Communication
-
Value & Financing
On the basis of the identified outcomes, the next step is to formulate SMART goals that can offer a framework to structure and leverage healthcare stakeholders’ efforts in personalized medicine.
After the event, we will work in partnership with DigitaleZorg.nl to report a summary of the insights, views and aspirations that will serve as a basis for the development of guidelines for the personalized medicine field in the Netherlands.
Confirmed facilitators of the event breakout sessions:
-
Peter Bertens, Senior Policy Advisor Innovation & Life Sciences, Nefarma
-
Anne Bruinvels, CEO, Px HealthCare B.V
-
Nadine Bongaerts, Co-owner & Co-founder, Biotecture
-
Jeroen Crasborn, Senior Healthcare Strategy Advisor, Achmea
